As soon as she entered Claire Bakery, Eli immediately realized that the place was much busier than she had imagined. Several of David’s friends from the basketball team had already gathered around one of the large tables. There were also several students from their classes talking and laughing together.
The atmosphere was quite lively, but David seemed not to care. As soon as he entered, his eyes immediately searched for someone.
"Where’s Natalie?"
"Upstairs," one of his friends replied. "Looks like she still doesn’t want to come down."
David immediately walked toward the stairs.
Eli, who had just entered with him, stopped for a moment. She watched David’s back as he walked farther away without looking back at her even once. A feeling of discomfort slowly arose in Eli’s chest at what David was doing. Although she tried to ignore it, it was not easy.
Natalie needs David.
Eli remembered their conversation in the car. David had already told her that Natalie was having a problem. She should have understood.
Still, a small part of her felt disappointed. Today was supposed to be their time together. Eli had even imagined that they could sit together, talk about the game, or simply spend time together without having to rush back to campus.
Now, even after Eli had come, David’s attention was still focused on Natalie.
Eli lowered her head. She did not want to admit that she was beginning to feel jealous.
Am I expecting too much?
The thought made her sigh immediately. She knew she had no right to demand that David always pay attention to her. Natalie had been David’s best friend since childhood. Meanwhile, she had only been part of his life for a few months.
A few minutes later, David came back downstairs with Natalie.
Natalie’s face still looked pale. Her eyes also appeared slightly puffy, making Eli immediately forget the disappointment she had felt earlier. The girl truly did not seem to be doing well.
"Eli," Natalie called softly.
Eli immediately approached her. "What happened to you?"
Natalie gave a faint smile. "I think my gastritis is acting up. I forgot to bring my medicine."
"But now? Should we go to the hospital?"
"No need." Natalie looked at David and weakly clung to his arm again. "David just gave me the medicine I usually take."
“So ... are you feeling better now?”
Natalie gave a small nod, though her smile looked forced. “A little.”
Then her eyes shifted to David. A clear sense of guilt was visible on her face. “I’m sorry for interrupting your time with Eli.”
David shook his head. “Don’t think about it.”
