“But what happened?”
David sighed. “Eli, don’t make everything complicated. We don’t have much time.”
The girl fell silent.
She actually still wanted to look at a few more shelves. There was one section she had been wanting to visit for a long time. She even wanted to look for a particular book that she planned to send as a gift to Naomi.
However, seeing David starting to look impatient, her desire slowly faded. “All right.”
David looked at her. “Are you done?”
Eli gave a small nod. “Yes.” She put the book she was holding back.
Just moments ago, she had imagined finding something suitable for Naomi. She wanted to send it as a small gift since it had been a long time since she had seen the woman.
However, now she did not want to make David wait any longer. Eli picked up her bag. “We can go now.”
David nodded in satisfaction. “Good.”
They walked out of the bookstore.
Eli followed David silently. There was a slight sense of disappointment lingering in her heart, but she tried not to think about it for too long.
Wasn’t David the one who had come all the way to pick her up? Eli had thought she could spend a little time outside the campus area with David, just like other couples did. But ... ah, Eli, wasn’t he already here to pick you up? Shouldn’t she appreciate that?
And perhaps, just as Natalie had said, she really did need to start learning to give her boyfriend more of her time.
“Natalie is at Claire Bakery. I think a lot of my classmates and teammates are there,” David said as soon as he got into the car and fastened his seat belt. The engine roared, signaling that they were ready to drive to their next destination.
“Would you mind if we keep a little distance between us?” David asked without looking at Eli at all. His focus remained on the road ahead.
“Oh, okay,” Eli replied softly.
“Don’t be sad, sweetheart,” David said with a faint smile. He gently rubbed the top of Eli’s head before focusing on the steering wheel again. “You know, right? I don’t want to drag you into trouble with those ‘crazy fans.’”
Eli nodded slowly. “Yes, I know.”
“Good.” David’s smile grew wider. “I’m lucky to have such a smart and obedient girlfriend.”
