Eli approached them with a questioning look at David. Hadn’t her boyfriend said he had practice for the competition preparation two months from now?
"You're here?"
Natalie nodded. "David actually got here first."
David smiled faintly. "I happened to be nearby."
Natalie immediately interrupted, "He’s always like that."
Eli looked at her in confusion. "Like what?"
"He always knows when I’m not doing well." Natalie turned to David with a small smile. "Even before I contact him, he already knows something is wrong."
David laughed softly. "Don't exaggerate."
"No. Seriously." Natalie looked at Eli again. "I got a bad grade earlier, and my mood immediately went downhill. Somehow, David suddenly showed up."
Eli looked at David, then turned her attention back to Natalie. "So all of this is just because of a grade?"
Her tone was not meant to be dismissive. However, after leaving singing practice just to come here, Eli felt a little annoyed. She could not completely hide it.
Natalie lowered her head. "I worked really hard."
Eli sighed. "I know. But you can still improve the grade."
"I know," Natalie replied softly. "But I’m still disappointed."
David, who had been silent until then, finally spoke. "Eli."
Eli turned to him.
"Don't be too hard on her."
Eli frowned. "I’m not being hard on Natalie."
"You may not mean to." David glanced at Natalie before looking back at Eli. "But you don't know how she feels."
Eli fell silent.
Natalie wiped the corner of her eye, which had begun to redden. "You're smart, Eli."
Her voice was soft.
"That's why you may never truly know what it's like to struggle just to get an average grade, only to find that when the result comes out, it's still not good enough."
Those words left Eli speechless. She had never meant to belittle Natalie. To her, a score of sixty-two was not the end of the world. But she was beginning to realize that not everyone dealt with failure in the same way.
"I didn't mean it that way," Eli finally said.
Natalie smiled faintly. "I know."
David looked at Eli for a moment and said, "You already came. So don't do anything else except comfort Natalie. She's different from you."
Eli fell silent. She had only just realized that she had left something important to her that day just to come here. However, when she saw that Natalie still looked sad, Eli pushed those feelings aside again.
