The boundaries they should have had as a couple slowly began to shift.
Eli still felt loved.
David still called her by terms of endearment, still drove her when he had the chance, still sent her messages before bed, and still gave her attention when they were alone together.
Because of that, Eli never truly felt that something was wrong.
I only thought that being a good girlfriend meant being understanding.
Josh finally found out that Eli had a boyfriend when he accidentally saw an incoming message on the girl’s phone. They were talking over a video call at the time, and the name David appeared on the screen several times. Eli noticed it and immediately picked up her phone, but Josh’s expression had already changed.
"David?"
Eli was silent for a moment before finally giving a small smile. "Yes."
"Is he your boyfriend?"
The question made Eli a little nervous. She had never really talked to Josh about David before. It was not because she wanted to keep him a secret, but because their relationship was still new, and Eli had not felt the need to explain everything.
"Yes."
Josh was silent for quite a while. "Since when?"
"A few months."
"A few months?" Josh repeated in disbelief. "And you're only telling me now?"
Eli laughed softly. "I didn't mean to hide it. I just hadn't had a chance to tell you."
Josh sighed. He honestly did not know how he should react. Eli was an adult. She had the right to have a life of her own, including deciding whom she wanted to be in a relationship with. However, when he heard the name David Ricardo, an uncomfortable feeling surfaced immediately.
"David Ricardo?"
Eli nodded.
"The captain of Raven's team?"
"Yes."
"He's ... the captain of our rival team, Eli."
Eli rolled her eyes. "You're not talking about basketball games, are you?"
Josh almost smiled, but his expression turned serious again. "I was just surprised."
"It has nothing to do with me, right?"
Josh looked at Eli through the screen. The girl's face looked so calm. There was even a small smile she could not hide when talking about David.
"Does he treat you well?"
The question made Eli smile more broadly. "Yes."
"Really?"
"Really. He's thoughtful, always makes sure I've eaten, picks me up when he can, and he supports me in many ways."
Josh did not answer immediately. He listened to everything until Eli finished speaking. "Then I just want you to be careful."
Eli's smile faded slightly. "I'm always careful."
"That's not what I mean."
Josh sighed softly before continuing, "You're still in college. Don't get so caught up in your relationship that you forget what you want to achieve."
Eli stared at the screen in slight disbelief.
"I'm not like that."
"I know. But I'm just reminding you."
"Josh, I can manage my own life." Eli's tone began to change. It was not loud, but it was enough to show that she was offended.
Josh realized it. "I'm not saying you can't."
"But that's what it sounds like."
