"Hey!" Josh called again. "I said let Eli go."

Eli turned around. She could see the anger on Josh's face. Several students had begun watching them, making Eli feel even more uncomfortable. She didn't want this argument to become a spectacle. More importantly, she didn't want Josh to fight David because of her.

"Josh," Eli finally called. "I'm fine."

David continued pulling her.

"I'm really fine," Eli continued, trying to smile. "You don't need to worry. I'll contact you later."

Josh didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on David. "Eli—"

"I'm fine."

Eli gave a small nod, as if trying to convince Josh as well as herself. She didn't want to be the center of attention. She didn't want everyone talking about them. And more than that, she didn't want the problem between her and David to become even bigger.

Finally, Josh only said, "Call me later."

Eli nodded once more and continued following wherever David took her. The man paid no attention to Eli's complaints. He kept taking her away.

Once they were far enough from the crowd, Eli immediately pulled her hand away. "David, stop."

David finally let go of her hand, but his face was still filled with anger. "What have you been thinking this whole time, huh?"

Eli rubbed her aching wrist. "I'm the one who should be asking you that."

David rubbed his face in frustration. "I told you, didn't I? I don't like you getting too close to him. So why were you sitting alone with him?"

"He's my family." Eli stared at David in disbelief. Eli sighed. She was beginning to grow tired of dealing with David's anger, which showed no sign of subsiding.

David scoffed sarcastically. "You call him family?"

"Josh just wanted to talk to me. I haven't been home for two months, and he came here to compete. What's wrong with me keeping him company for a while?"

David stared at her sharply. "I still don't like it, Eli."

Eli fell silent. She didn't understand why their conversation always came back to the same thing. "David, I've already explained to you who Josh is. And I feel that what I did didn't offend anyone. But why are you—"

"I don't care about your explanation, Eli!"

"But I do."

That answer made David even angrier. He stepped closer, his gaze growing sharper.
