"He came here to play," Eli explained. "I was just keeping him company for a while."

"I know, but I don't care." David's voice grew louder.

Josh, who had been silent until then, began watching Eli. He could see the confusion on the girl's face. Eli didn't even seem to know what she had done wrong.

"David," Eli said softly, "don't talk like that."

David looked at her. "Why? Because he's here?"

Eli frowned. "That's not it."

"If that's not it, then what is?" David stepped a little closer. "I've told you many times that I don't like you getting too close to other men."

"Josh isn't some other man."

"To me, he is."

"Then explain," Josh said. "What's the problem? Why can't I get involved when it comes to Eli?" He gave a slight smirk, still staring at David calculatingly. "Who are you to Eli?"

David didn't answer. He simply turned his sharp gaze back to Eli. "Come with me, Eli."

"Didn't you hear me?" David snapped. "You know I don't like seeing you still keeping in touch with Josh."

"I already told you, Josh is a good friend of mine."

"A good friend?" David let out a short laugh without the slightest hint of amusement. "You're sitting here together, laughing, and you still call him just a friend?"

Eli began to feel uncomfortable. "David, you're going too far."

Eli flinched. “David!”

The man's grip was so tight that her wrist began to hurt. She tried to pull her hand back, but David did not let go immediately.

“David, let go.”

For the first time, Eli felt like she truly didn't recognize the man standing in front of her. The David who had always spoken gently to her seemed to have turned into someone else simply because Josh was there.
