“But you acted like it.”

David shook his head. “You deliberately did all of this.”

Eli was beginning to lose her patience. “Did what?”

“Letting Josh drive you here. Saying in front of everyone that you have a boyfriend who is the captain of the basketball team. And now you’re standing in front of me and acting as if nothing happened.” David stared at her sharply. “You deliberately made me look like an idiot, didn’t you?”

Eli’s eyes slowly changed. She did not answer immediately. Every word David said felt like an accusation thrown at her without the slightest thought about how she felt.

“I never meant to do that.”

“But you did.”

“David—”

“Do you think I don’t know what you’re doing?” David continued. “You want to make me jealous? You want to show me that you can get another man whenever you want? Or maybe from the beginning, you really thought our relationship was just a game?”

Eli looked at him with hurt in her eyes. Her eyes began to well up, but she tried to hold the tears back. “Is that what you think of me?”

David fell silent.

Eli took a deep breath before continuing. “When in fact, wasn’t it you who hurt me first? Played with my feelings?”

“Okay, I can understand that.” Eli nodded slowly. “But when other people misunderstood you and Natalie, you didn’t say anything. You let them think that the two of you were actually together. As if you didn’t mind them thinking that.”

“It was just a joke.” David rubbed his face in frustration. “Can’t you see how ridiculous it was?”

“I was there, David. And I don’t think it was just some silly joke.”

Those words made David fall silent for a moment.

“I stood there and saw everything.” Eli lowered her head for a moment, trying to hold back the tears that were beginning to fill her eyes.

“But when have you ever tried to understand me?”

David sighed again. Instead of feeling guilty, his expression only hardened further.

“Why didn’t you say from the beginning that the two of you were a couple? If that’s what you wanted, just say so. Then I wouldn’t have had to waste my time on a girl like you,” David continued in a cutting tone.

David kept talking without realizing how every word he said was hurting the girl in front of him even more.

“There are plenty of girls who would gladly date me. I don’t need to chase after someone who can’t even appreciate this relationship.”

For a few moments, Eli could only stare at David. Her tears finally fell, but she did not immediately wipe them away. It wasn’t because she wanted to cry in front of David, but because for the first time, she truly didn’t know what to say.
