“Damn it!” Natalie muttered as soon as she left the area around Eli’s dorm. “Why is she starting to avoid me?”
The sky over Raven was growing hotter. Natalie clicked her tongue again and continued walking toward the gym. The place where David was.
After leaving David and Eli to talk, Natalie had not completely gone away. She had watched what was happening from a building not far from the dorm. Her instincts told her that David and Eli were becoming increasingly tense.
And she was right.
Natalie saw David walk away from Eli with a sullen expression. Something had clearly happened between them. And that made Natalie’s mood even better.
“What happened between you and Eli? She doesn’t even want to see me,” Natalie asked in a gentle tone, her demeanor sweet as usual. She then sat right beside David.
Several of David’s teammates who had been trying to talk to their captain for some time received no response at all. Some of them were grateful for Natalie’s arrival and hoped David’s emotions would soon settle down. They had to face fairly intense training in preparation for the intercollegiate basketball championship a month from now.
David turned his head, his jaw immediately tightening. “Don’t mention that name again, Natalie. We’re already broken up.”
Natalie was stunned. “Oh my God! You... seriously?” She looked at David sympathetically, but inside, she was cheering with joy. “Broken up? Oh my God, David. I really didn’t expect that. You two were doing fine, weren’t you? There was only a little misunderstanding, and didn’t you... talk to Eli about it?”
“There was no misunderstanding between us, Natalie,” David scoffed.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course not,” David hissed.
Natalie chose to remain silent, listening to everything David said. From time to time, she tried to calm him down. And about 20 minutes passed before the man finally became calmer.
“You really are my best friend,” David said as he put an arm around Natalie affectionately. “I’m going to practice now. I feel bad for my teammates. They’ve been waiting this whole time.”
“Of course.” Natalie smiled broadly. “That’s what friends are for, right?”
She let David rejoin his teammates. Natalie remained faithfully at the edge of the court, occasionally cheering David on. And it felt... as if she had returned to the time when there was only her and David.
No Eli.
Not long after, one of David’s team’s substitute players walked over to Natalie. Beside him was his girlfriend, who had been waiting near the small bleachers by the court. The two exchanged a glance before finally approaching Natalie.
