Once again, there was a knock on the door.
“I know you’re in there,” Natalie said again. “Can I come in?”
Eli stared at the door for a few moments before finally answering, “Sorry, Natalie. I want to be alone right now.”
“Then can we talk? Just for a moment,” Natalie said, slightly insistently.
“I really want to rest.”
Eli’s tone remained gentle. There was no anger, no harsh rejection. But this time, she did not want to open the door and listen to something that might only make her thoughts even more chaotic.
Natalie fell silent outside. “I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m fine.” Eli tried to wipe away any traces of her tears. “You don’t need to worry.”
“Are you sure?”
Eli closed her eyes for a moment. “Yes.”
Natalie fell silent again before finally saying, “I hope you’re okay, Eli. On the court earlier, David looked frightening. I’ve never seen him that angry before.”
Eli lowered her head. Hearing David’s name made her chest feel tight again, but this time, she did not want to talk about it.
“I was asked to find out what actually happened to him,” Natalie continued. “I thought maybe you knew what made him like that.”
Eli remained silent for quite some time. Then, without realizing it, the corners of her lips lifted slightly, not because she found it funny, but because the question felt so strange.
“Aren’t you his childhood friend?”
Natalie did not answer immediately.
Eli continued in a calm voice, “Why are you asking me?”
Don’t lie. If something’s wrong, just tell me. I’m not far from where you are.
Don’t worry. I’ll call you if I need help.
Good. Otherwise, I’ll break into your dorm just to make sure you’re okay.
Seeing the message, the corners of Eli’s lips lifted into a faint, bitter smile. At least, when her world felt unpleasant and messy, there were still people who cared about her unconditionally, the Miller family, who always gave her a place to come home to, Naomi, who listened to her without judgment, Grace with all her innocence, and Josh, who always came whenever she needed help the most.
Eli slowly stood up, straightened her slightly rumpled clothes, then walked into the bathroom to wash her face. The cold water running over her skin felt refreshing, washing away the remnants of tears still clinging to her cheeks.
“I can’t keep crying for too long.”
She knew the days ahead might not be easy. She had lost a selfish boyfriend, but at the same time, she had just found herself again.
“I won’t sacrifice my own matters and feelings anymore for someone who never even wanted to understand me.” She gently patted her face. “What a waste of time.”
