Josh raised his head again. “I can still—”
“No.” Eli cut him off before he could finish.
Josh looked at her. “You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“I know.”
“What?”
“Because you’re definitely going to say you can still play.”
Josh fell silent for a few seconds before unconsciously letting out a sigh.
Eli then looked at him more gently. The worry she had been holding back finally became clear in her eyes.
“Josh, you’ve done your best up until now,” she said more softly. “You don’t need to prove anything by continuing to play in this condition.”
Josh did not answer immediately.
The words were simple, but they slowly made his defenses crumble. He knew Eli was not trying to stop him because she did not believe in his abilities. The girl was only afraid that he would worsen his injury.
And for some reason, seeing Eli so worried made Josh unable to consider all of this a minor problem anymore.
Before Josh could answer, a voice came from the stands.
“Eli’s right!”
Josh turned.
Althea was already standing near the barrier with the other family members. Her face also looked worried.
“Don’t push yourself, Josh,” Althea said. “The game is important, but your health is much more important.”
Grace nodded quickly. “That’s right. If your hand gets more seriously injured because you push yourself, then you won’t just miss this game.”
Naomi, who was standing beside them, also called out, “Just leave this game to your team. You’ve already brought them this far.”
Lydia also nodded. “We all support you. No one will blame you if you have to stop because of an injury.”
Naomi still wanted to say something and raised her voice slightly. “Eli only wants you to be safe. Listen to her this time.”
Chris even raised his hand as he called out, “Josh, if you keep forcing yourself to play after the doctor tells you not to, we’re all going to lecture you later!”
A few people around them chuckled, but the concern remained clearly visible on the family’s faces.
Josh looked at his teammates. “I’ll go get examined. But don’t let them take this victory.”
One of the players smiled. “Don’t worry, Captain. We’ll take care of it.”
Josh nodded, then looked back at Eli. “Satisfied?”
Eli nodded. “Very.”
Josh chuckled softly.
For the first time since he fell, the tension on his face eased slightly. He then allowed the medical staff to take him toward the medical room, while Eli continued walking beside him.
Behind them, Josh’s teammates returned to their positions on the court. They knew the game would become much more difficult without their captain. However, none of them intended to give up.
The medical staff then helped Josh stand. Josh could walk on his own, but his movements were still a little cautious. Eli remained beside him, even instinctively matching her pace to Josh’s so that he would not have to walk too quickly.
“I can walk by myself,” Josh said.
“I know.”
“Then why are you still beside me?”
