They stood at the edge of the court, occasionally cheering to encourage their teammates, until the game time finally drew closer to the end.
Miller continued trying to catch up.
However, Raven gave them no chance. Every time Miller managed to narrow the gap, Raven widened their lead again. The Miller players continued fighting until the last second, but without Josh on the court, their game was no longer as strong as before.
Until finally, the long whistle sounded.
The game was over.
Raven University won the semifinal.
Cheers immediately filled the sports hall. The Raven players patted each other on the shoulders and embraced, while some of their supporters stood and shouted the name of their university. On the other side, the Miller players could only stand there, breathing heavily as they accepted the result of the game that had just ended.
David stood in the middle of the court, still breathing heavily. Sweat covered his face, but a smile slowly appeared on his lips.
This victory belonged to him, at least, that was how he felt.
He looked at the scoreboard, then clenched his hand.
Raven had won while Miller had lost.
And although everyone knew Josh could not continue the game because of his injury, David did not want to think about that. To him, what mattered most was the final result.
He had managed to defeat Miller and could take Raven to the next round. However, when his gaze then shifted to Josh standing at the edge of the court with Eli, his smile slowly faded.
Josh was still wearing his game uniform. His injured wrist was now wrapped in a bandage, while Eli stood not far from him. Somehow, seeing the two of them standing together after the game made the victory he had just achieved feel a little different.
Josh did not look too disappointed. Instead, he watched his teammates approach with gloomy expressions.
“Captain,” one of the players said.
Josh looked at them.
“Sorry.”
Josh frowned. “For what?”
“We lost.”
Then he pointed at one of the players who was still wearing a gloomy expression. “And you’re even almost making me sad with a face like that.”
“Captain!” the player protested, finally laughing.
Soft laughter immediately came from several other players. The atmosphere, which had previously been filled with disappointment, slowly began to ease. They were still disappointed, but being around Josh always made them feel that this loss was not the end of everything.
“That’s true,” one of them said.
“We still have another chance.”
Josh nodded. “That’s what you should be thinking about.”
One of the players then patted Josh on the shoulder from behind. “If you hadn’t gotten injured earlier, maybe we could still have won.”
Josh immediately shook his head. “Don’t start blaming the circumstances. You all did your best.”
“All right, Captain.”
“Besides,” Josh added with a smile, “I don’t want to see you guys looking gloomy for too long. We lost as a team, so we also have to get back up as a team.”
