Several of the players laughed softly again. One of them even pulled Josh into a brief hug, which immediately drew a mild protest from Josh because his hand was injured.
“Hey, easy! My hand still hurts!”
“Sorry, Captain!”
Eli, who was standing beside Josh, also smiled.
Watching their interaction, Eli understood even more why the players respected Josh so much. Their relationship was not merely that of a captain and his team members. They looked like a group of friends who had been through many things together, supporting each other, teasing each other, and still standing together when one of them fell.
She had always liked the way Josh handled things. Even when he lost, the young man never allowed himself or the people around him to remain trapped in disappointment for too long.
However, that calm did not last long.
“Wow.” Natalie’s voice came from behind.
Eli turned.
Natalie walked over with several Raven players. Her expression looked calm, even with a faint smile, as though she only wanted to have a normal conversation after the game. However, her gaze turned toward Eli and Josh several times before finally stopping on David.
“Congratulations, David,” Natalie said.
David nodded briefly. His attention was still focused on the court and his teammates who were celebrating their victory.
Then Natalie looked at Eli. The faint smile remained on her face. “I really didn’t expect you to be so worried about Josh.”
Eli immediately knew where this conversation was heading. She took a breath. There had already been enough things throughout the day to drain her thoughts. She did not want to deal with Natalie again, especially not now.
“None of your business.”
Natalie smiled slightly, as if the answer had not offended her at all. “I’m just saying what I saw.”
“Oh, God.” Eli rubbed her forehead. “Aren’t you tired?”
Natalie frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
“Is there no other topic?”
This was what she wanted.
She did not need to raise her voice. She did not need to directly accuse Eli. All it took was a few simple sentences and a little attention to Eli’s reaction, and the conversation had already developed into something bigger.
Now, everyone’s attention was focused on them.
And Natalie knew that the more people witnessed it, the easier it would be for her to make herself look like the one who had been hurt.
“I never said you still had a relationship with David,” Natalie said softly.
“But you always talk about me as if I’m still a problem in your relationship.”
“I only—”
“If I’m with Josh now,” Eli cut in, “then it has nothing to do with you anymore, right?”
The atmosphere around them immediately changed.
