Althea clicked her tongue, but eventually broke into a wide smile. “Yes, please go take care of your business. And come back by dinnertime.”

Cale grinned broadly. “Yes, ma’am, most understanding sister-in-law.”

Lydia snorted softly. The way Cale talked was incredibly annoying. Yet a few minutes later, she was still walking beside her husband as they left the campsite. Hand in hand, they followed the edge of the forest.

A narrow path along the river stretched between wild grass and pine trees. The air felt colder in that area. The afternoon sunlight filtered through gaps in the leaves and cast shimmering reflections across the surface of the gently flowing water.

Lydia glanced at the man beside her. “We’re pretty far from the campsite now.”

Cale merely smiled in response.

“Cale.” Lydia was starting to get exasperated.

“Yes, my love?”

“You really aren’t going to tell me what you’re planning?”

This time, Cale only looked at her briefly before the corner of his lips lifted slightly. And for some reason, that smile only made Lydia even more suspicious.

“You really want to know, my love?”

The low whisper had barely left his lips when Cale suddenly wrapped an arm around Lydia’s waist.

“Cale!”

Lydia did not even have time to react before the man lifted her off the ground. Reflexively, her arms immediately wrapped around Cale’s neck while her legs locked around her husband’s waist to keep herself from falling.

“Put me down!” Lydia protested.

Cale paid no attention to her at all. He simply laughed softly and continued walking along the riverbank as though carrying his wife like that was the most natural thing in the world.

“Cale Miller!” Lydia pinched the man's shoulder mercilessly.

“I’m listening.”

“Put me down right now.”

“No.”

“You’re insufferable.”

“I know.”

Lydia pinched his shoulder again.
