The moment Chris said it so casually, nearly all of the guests fell silent. They exchanged glances with one another. Some were surprised by what Chris had just revealed.
Chris Miller.
That name might not appear in the media as often as Cale Miller's. But to the people in this room, it was by no means unfamiliar.
The youngest son of the Miller family, one of the heirs to TnC Group, and... Cale Miller’s younger brother.
Gradually, whispers began to spread throughout the hall. Some people looked surprised. Others seemed as though they had just figured something out. Of course Naomi would be with someone like Chris. It was hardly strange for them to be close.
And most of those whispering to one another were careful to ensure their conversations could not be heard by the people at the center of attention—Naomi and Chris.
Falcon was certainly aware of the shift in atmosphere, but he tried not to let it affect him. His objective was far greater than mere irritation or annoyance at Chris’s behavior.
No wonder the man beside Naomi had been able to remain so relaxed and unaffected by his surroundings from the moment he entered the banquet.
“I didn’t know Miss Naomi was engaged.” Though his sharp gaze was directed at Chris, Falcon still tried to maintain a smile.
Chris smiled pleasantly. “Yes. A lot of people don’t know yet.”
Falcon let out a quiet breath. He could not allow himself to be affected by Chris’s presence, which had felt irritating from the very beginning. If this had not been Silas’s banquet, and if he had not come here with a specific purpose, he might have ordered his men to get rid of Chris from the start.
Falcon looked at Naomi again and said, “In that case, congratulations.”
“Thank you.” Chris spoke again, as though refusing to let Naomi say anything in response to Falcon.
For a while, no one spoke.
Falcon had no intention of leaving the table where Naomi and Chris were seated. His attempt to get Naomi alone had failed, but he was unwilling to give up so easily. Naomi was standing right before him after Falcon had tried time and time again to pursue her. He would not waste the opportunity now that he had it.
Of course she was angry. Not just angry, but also resentful and afraid, and she had spent many nights suffering nightmares because of Falcon. Had the man never considered the consequences of what he had done to her?
But standing in a room filled with people like these made Naomi realize one thing. Falcon wanted a reaction from her, and she had no intention of giving him one.
“I just want to enjoy the party.”
The answer sounded simple. Yet it was enough to make Falcon lose the direction of the conversation he had been carefully building.
Chris even looked extremely pleased to hear it. He picked up his drink and said casually, “See? My fiancée is a very kind person.”
Naomi immediately kicked Chris under the table, no longer able to contain her irritation at his behavior. It made Chris wince in pain. Even so, his smile only grew wider.
Falcon watched their interaction in silence. For some reason, the sight left him feeling uncomfortable. Because the girl he had been pursuing all this time was not someone who was easy to approach. Whenever Falcon came near her, all he encountered was fear, suppressed anger, and a desire to run as far away as possible.
