Cale laughed at Brandon’s remark. “So... tell me, what brought you here?”
“An invitation from an old friend. And they said there was a chance you might come. As it happens, there are a few things I wanted to discuss.” Brandon smiled faintly.
“At first, I thought you were starting to enjoy family gatherings like this.”
Brandon chuckled softly. “As if.”
Their conversation was so casual that several people around them fell silent. Not many people could speak to Cale Miller like that. Some of the guests had business interests connected to Cale Miller. But Cale was very careful about maintaining boundaries in his interactions. That was why they were so curious about why someone Cale had just met could speak to him so familiarly.
Even Silas watched the scene with an unreadable expression. He had never expected that the man who had interrupted his conversation with Falcon earlier would turn out to know Cale so well.
Ever since he first met Cale Miller, who had been introduced as Gavin Devereux’s trusted confidant more than a decade ago, Silas had done his best to become close to him. Unfortunately, Cale was extremely selective about who he allowed near him.
That was why Silas unconsciously clenched his fist. He had to find out what kind of relationship existed between them. He was certain it was more than mere business.
Meanwhile, Falcon, standing among them, was completely ignored.
As though he were not even there.
The situation made Falcon repeatedly suppress his irritation.
Brandon, on the other hand, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the party, especially now that Cale was there.
“Ah, let me introduce you,” Cale said, wrapping an affectionate arm around Lydia’s waist. “My beloved wife. Lydia Miller.”
Lydia frowned, then smiled faintly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Brandon.”
“The honor and pleasure should be mine, Mrs. Miller.” Brandon bowed politely. Then, when his eyes inadvertently drifted toward Naomi and Chris, he asked, “And...”
“Remarkable.” Brandon slowly shook his head. “I never expected to hear those words come out of your mouth.”
He turned his full attention to Naomi, as though trying to confirm something. “So... is it true what Mr. Chris said? That Mr. Chris is Miss Devereux’s fiancé?”
Naomi looked at Brandon intently. She considered what would be the appropriate response in a situation like this. The moment Brandon asked the question, Falcon appeared interested in whatever answer Naomi might give. And as Naomi discreetly observed her surroundings, she realized the same was true of every guest present.
It was as though they were all waiting to find out whether what Chris had said was true. Naomi smiled faintly, though deep down she was beginning to regret her decision to attend this party.
At first, she had only thought she would have to deal with Silas Evermont and a few overly curious members of the Devereux family. She certainly had not expected to run into Don Falcon, the very person she most wanted to avoid. But now, with Brandon’s arrival, the situation had become far more complicated.
The man looked completely at ease, as though the question he had just asked was not capable of making the entire hall fall silent.
Naomi could feel the atmosphere around her changing. The conversations that had once filled every corner of the room gradually faded away. Some people were even watching them openly now, no longer bothering to hide their curiosity.
