Lydia pouted softly, though she couldn't hide her laughter. She smoothed her slightly tousled hair before adjusting her position to make herself more comfortable.
Meanwhile, Cale gently stroked the ends of Lydia's hair as it draped over her shoulder. His fingers moved slowly, almost unconsciously, as though the touch had long since become a habit that always calmed his mind after an exhausting day.
"I like this peace and quiet."
Lydia looked at him in confusion.
"Because once everyone else is asleep..." Cale's gaze slowly dropped to his wife's lips before meeting her eyes again. "...I finally get to have my wife all to myself."
Lydia caught her breath for a moment. "Cale." Her voice was little more than a whisper.
But Cale didn't answer. He merely smiled faintly before rising to his feet, still holding Lydia securely in his arms.
Reflexively, Lydia's arms slipped back around her husband's neck. "Where are you going?"
Cale glanced briefly at the stack of files on his desk. "To our room."
"What about your work?" Lydia asked in surprise.
"It can wait until tomorrow."
That brief reply made Lydia follow her husband's gaze. She let out a soft laugh when she realized that all the documents covering his desk had truly been abandoned without a second thought.
"So your work isn't the most important thing after all."
"To me, you're the most important."
With calm, unhurried steps, Cale carried Lydia out of the study. Meanwhile, the desk lamp above the reports that still covered his desk remained lit, becoming the only witness that, on that night, someone had chosen to put off all of his work to spend the rest of his time with the woman he loved most.
