Lydia stood beside the bed for a few moments, gazing at Naomi's sleeping face. A surge of joy and emotion welled up inside her as she witnessed the honesty and renewed enthusiasm for life the girl had just shown. She hoped Naomi would continue moving forward without burdens and achieve her dreams at her new university.
"Sleep well, Naomi," she whispered softly.
After making sure Naomi was completely comfortable, Lydia carefully stepped back. She switched off the main light and turned on the dim bedside lamp in the corner of the room, leaving the bedroom wrapped in a peaceful silence.
As she walked down the hallway toward her room, Lydia noticed that the door to her husband's study was still slightly open. Cale was still seated behind the large desk, focused on reading through several business reports he hadn't had the chance to finish that afternoon. He immediately looked up the moment he heard the familiar sound of footsteps entering the room.
"Is Naomi asleep?" Cale asked, relaxing slightly in his chair.
Lydia gave a small nod as she walked in. "She just fell asleep."
Cale let out a relieved sigh before closing the document folder in front of him, giving his full attention to his wife. "Thank goodness."
Lydia didn't sit down right away. She stood beside Cale's desk, and for some reason, a small smile had remained on her face ever since she left Naomi's room. Naturally, it didn't escape her husband's notice.
"What is it?" Cale asked, frowning in confusion.
Lydia gave a small shake of her head. "Nothing."
"But you've been smiling this whole time."
Lydia finally let out a soft laugh. She walked over to Cale's chair, looking at her husband with warmth shining in her eyes. "I just feel... as though I'd just listened to my daughter tell me about her day before going to sleep."
Cale fell silent for quite a while after hearing those words. His gaze shifted toward the large window overlooking the dark yard outside, as though he were contemplating something, before he finally shook his head with a faint smile.
"If it were me..." Cale paused, then looked back at Lydia. "That's not how it feels."
