The car carrying Cale sped forward without slowing down in the slightest. The escort vehicles in front and behind blared their sirens, cutting through the heavy traffic of Carrington Bay and clearing the widest possible path so they could reach the scene as quickly as possible.
But the atmosphere inside the cabin was completely different. It was so silent that the constant stream of notification alerts from the tablet and the crackle of the communication radio sounded even louder and more unsettling.
Vincent sat in the front seat with his headset continuously connected to the emergency command center. His fingers moved rapidly, transferring data from one screen to another as he received reports from dozens of security personnel who had already been deployed throughout the city.
Meanwhile, Cale never once looked away from the digital map displayed on his tablet. A single red dot blinked faintly on the screen, marking the last known location of Daniel's vehicle, which was no longer moving.
"Sir," Vincent said quietly after receiving another update through his headset. "The hospital just reported that Daniel has regained consciousness."
Cale finally lifted his eyes from the tablet.
"He's asking to speak with you directly," Vincent added. Without wasting a second, he pressed several buttons to connect the call to Cale's phone.
A few seconds later, the sound of heavy, ragged breathing came through the line.
"...Sir..."
Daniel's voice was weak and hoarse, as though every word demanded the last reserves of strength from his battered body. "I'm sorry..."
Cale did not answer immediately, giving his aide a moment.
Daniel closed his eyes again in the hospital ward, enduring the excruciating pain still spreading throughout his body. "I failed... I failed to protect Mrs. Lydia and Miss Naomi."
The weight of regret and frustration in his voice was so overwhelming that even Vincent, sitting in the front seat, lowered his head, sharing the burden of one of the men he trusted. Yet Cale's expression remained calm and composed.
"You're still alive," Cale said firmly. "That means you haven't failed completely."
Daniel fell silent on the other end of the line. His superior's words did not sound like comforting reassurance, nor were they a gentle absolution. They were an unmistakable order and a reminder to remain focused on the situation at hand.
Daniel continued, his voice growing weaker. "They dragged Miss Naomi into the vehicle first. Mrs. Lydia tried desperately to stop them, and then... she was struck until she collapsed."
Cale's jaw immediately hardened when he heard that his wife had been hurt.
Daniel took a long breath, gathering the last of his strength to finish his report. "I tried to go after them and get them back, but... I was shot from the side. A few seconds passed without a sound, and after that, I completely lost consciousness. That's all I can remember, sir."
Silence once again filled the car. Cale did not ask another question because he knew Daniel had already given every valuable piece of information he possessed despite being in such critical condition.
"Get some rest," Cale said, his voice still calm but firm. "Let the medical team treat all of your injuries."
Before Daniel could reply, the call on Cale's phone slowly disconnected. Cale lowered the phone without saying another word.
Vincent did not dare speak until several seconds later, after processing everything he had just heard. "At least we can confirm that Falcon was at the scene."
