Those words made Vincent instinctively lift his head. For a brief instant, the hope that had nearly died rekindled in his eyes. His gaze reflexively shifted to Cale.
The man remained with his back to him. He did not move, but Vincent knew that not a single word of the report had escaped his hearing.
"How is she?" Vincent asked quickly, trying to keep his voice calm even though his heart had begun to pound harder.
Ricko swallowed. "She's still alive."
At that answer, Vincent let out a slight breath of relief. The tension that had gripped his shoulders slowly eased. At least...
Lydia was still alive.
But that sense of relief didn't even last a few seconds. Ricko’s voice came through the radio again.
"But unfortunately, the target was successfully taken out through the back entrance."
Those words left no one speaking. Vincent didn't react immediately. His fingers instinctively tightened around the radio.
"Taken by whom?" he asked quietly.
In the rear courtyard, Ricko closed his eyes briefly before answering. "Jasper."
Silence fell once again, and this time it felt far more oppressive. Vincent slowly raised his head. His gaze settled on Cale's back, still standing tall as he faced Silas.
The man did not move at all. He didn't turn around, nor did he utter a single word. Only his right hand slowly curled into a fist until his knuckles turned white.
Ricko continued his report. Every word that left his mouth seemed heavier than the last. "We almost reached her." He paused for a moment, looking toward the forest road that now lay empty.
Silas's gaze locked onto Cale's face once more. There wasn't the slightest trace of fear in his eyes. He even took a calm step forward, letting his leather shoe crunch over the shards of glass scattered across the floor.
"You see?" he said quietly. "You broke through my defenses. You made it into this house." He paused for a moment, deliberately allowing every word that left his mouth to sink in more deeply.
"But in the end," the corner of his lips curled upward again, forming a mocking smile full of triumph, "you still failed to bring your wife home."
Silas let out a quiet chuckle. It sounded utterly satisfied, as though he was savoring every second of the failure his opponent had just suffered.
"And the funny part," he continued, giving a slight shake of his head, "is that the one who took her away was the very person you always thought mattered the least." He looked straight into Cale's eyes.
"Jasper... turned out to choose the right side."
