"Excuse me."
A middle-aged doctor walked in with two nurses carrying several pieces of medical equipment. The moment he saw Lydia sitting on the edge of the bed with the IV line no longer in her hand, his brow immediately furrowed.
"Mrs. Miller," he said in a gentle yet firm tone. "It seems I've arrived at just the right time. I believe you should still be resting in bed."
The doctor gave a faint smile, but his gaze quickly shifted to the IV site on Lydia's hand, where it was still bleeding. "And I also see... we have a little extra work to do before Mr. Miller is allowed to go anywhere."
The man in the white coat gave a slight nod to the two nurses standing behind him. "Help Mrs. Miller back into bed."
Before either nurse could move, Cale had already bent down. Carefully, he slipped one arm behind Lydia's back while the other supported her knees. His movements were so gentle, as though he feared that using even the slightest bit of force might injure his wife again.
"I can get myself back into bed," Lydia protested softly.
"I know," Cale replied without looking away. "But let me do this."
His voice was so gentle that Lydia no longer had the strength to argue. She simply let out a quiet breath and allowed Cale to lay her back down on the bed. The moment her back touched the mattress, the pain in her shoulder and waist returned, making her wince slightly.
Cale immediately adjusted the pillow behind her head, then pulled the blanket up to cover her with movements that were almost second nature.
The doctor observed all of this briefly before putting on a pair of medical gloves.
