"And give me just a few more minutes, Mr. Miller," he said calmly. "There's one thing I'd like to explain about your wife's condition."
The way the doctor spoke those words made Cale furrow his brow again. His gaze instinctively shifted to Lydia, while the anxiety that had eased, even if only slightly, slowly returned to fill his chest.
"First of all," he said, "I want to assure you that there's nothing you need to worry about regarding Mrs. Miller's physical condition."
The doctor reopened several pages of the CT scan results in his hands, then placed them on the small table beside the bed so Cale could see them.
"The CT scan is clear. There's no bleeding inside the abdominal cavity. Her vital organs are also in good condition." His finger moved to the next page of the examination results. "The ultrasound shows no damage to the liver, stomach, intestines, or any other organs. Her lab results are also quite good. A few of the values were temporarily abnormal due to dehydration and exhaustion, but they're already starting to return to normal."
Cale, who had been standing there with a tense expression, slowly let out a sigh of relief. "So," he asked carefully, "all the pain she's been experiencing wasn't caused by an internal injury?"
The doctor gave a small nod. "That's right." He looked back at Lydia. "The severe abdominal pain you've been experiencing over the past few days wasn't caused by a physical injury."
Lydia looked confused. "It wasn't... because of the food I ate while I was being held captive, was it?" she asked softly.
"No."
The room fell silent once more. Even the two nurses who had been putting away the medical equipment stopped what they were doing, giving the doctor room to speak without interruption.
"For the past several days, your body has been living under extraordinary stress." The doctor's voice remained calm, but every word was unmistakably clear. "You were trapped in a situation filled with constant threats. You didn't know when you would be hurt. You didn't know whether you would survive. You didn't know whether anyone would come to save you."
Lydia slowly lowered her gaze. Memories of the warehouse resurfaced—the dark room, the suffocating air, the sound of footsteps that made her heart stop for a moment every time she heard them.
