Seven days had passed.
Yet every morning, the scene in the VIP hospital room never changed.
Before the morning sun had even fully illuminated the hospital grounds, Chris would already be pushing open the door to Naomi's room. The scent of fresh flowers always greeted him, even though the bouquets never lasted more than two days before they wilted and were replaced with new ones. He placed a bouquet of white lilies into the vase, then carried out the flowers that had begun to wither without ever asking a nurse for help.
After that, following a routine he knew by heart, he walked to the window and slowly opened the curtains to let the morning sunlight warm the room. Naomi had once said that she preferred sunlight to lights that were too bright.
Not once had Chris forgotten that little habit since the first day she was admitted.
He then checked the room temperature, making sure it wasn't too cold. He carefully straightened Naomi's blanket before taking the warm towel the nurse had prepared and gently wiping the girl's palms. His movements were so careful, as though Naomi were merely asleep and could wake up at any moment.
"You'd definitely scold me if you knew I was doing all this," he murmured softly with a faint smile. "You always said I was too stiff and completely unsuited to taking care of someone."
There was no answer.
The only sound was the steady beeping of the heart monitor, the only sign that Naomi was still fighting. Chris pulled over a chair and sat beside the bed. From the bag he always carried, he took out his work tablet. His responsibilities as one of the directors of TnC Group couldn't simply be set aside.
"Ashbourne's stock price went up again today," he said casually as he turned a page. "It looks like Cale's starting to get overwhelmed because so many investors want to meet with him."
He smiled faintly, hoping for the usual response.
"And Brandon," he continued. "His injuries are getting better. Yesterday, he insisted on practicing walking even though the doctor hadn't allowed him to do it for very long. Stubborn, isn't he? I think he's starting to pick up your habits."
The room fell silent again.
Chris looked at Naomi's face for a long moment. She was still pale, but she looked much more peaceful than she had a few days earlier. The small wounds on her temple were beginning to fade, while her breathing had become much more regular.
"I saw Lydia yesterday too," he said softly. "She's doing much better. The doctor said she'll be able to go home in two days."
He paused for a moment, hoping Naomi's eyelids would flutter. But once again, that hope dissolved into silence.
