The door closed again. The room suddenly fell silent. For the first time in the past seven days, that silence no longer felt suffocating.
Cale looked at Naomi for several seconds before unconsciously letting out a long breath. It felt as though he had finally released the burden that had been pressing relentlessly against his chest for the past week.
A small smile appeared on his face, this time without the shadow of fear lingering behind it.
"You're looking at me as if you'll never see me again, Mr. Cale," Naomi said softly. She had noticed the way he had been looking at her all this time. "I... I'm okay now. You heard what the—"
Cale pulled her into a tight embrace. Even so, he was careful of Naomi's injuries, including the IV line inserted into her hand. His sudden action caught Naomi by surprise, but in the end, she felt deeply grateful to be back with them again.
"I'm sorry," Cale said quietly.
"You didn't do anything wrong, Mr. Cale," Naomi replied softly. "You've done your very best."
"Get well soon, and do everything the doctor tells you." Cale slowly released their embrace. He gently smoothed a loose strand of Naomi's hair back into place. "Now... I can finally go home with peace of mind."
Naomi nodded obediently. But she immediately remembered someone she had been so worried about. "How is Mrs. Lydia? She's... all right, isn't she?"
Cale gently stroked the top of Naomi's head. "Yes, Lydia is fine. She can't wait to see you, but her condition still isn't completely stable."
"What happened to her?" Naomi asked, her eyes filled with concern. She was afraid something terrible had happened to Lydia. "Don't tell me—"
"No," Cale interrupted gently. "Lydia is truly fine. Don't worry."
Naomi looked at Cale for a long moment. There was an unwavering certainty in his eyes, as though confirming that every word he had said was true.
Lydia was fine.
"All right."
***
The room fell quiet again after Cale left. Only Chris and Naomi remained in the hospital room.
Silence settled over the room once more, but this time it was no longer the suffocating silence of the past several days. The heart monitor continued its steady rhythm, while the afternoon sunlight slowly filtered through the gap in the curtains, bringing a warmth that had felt so distant for the past week.
Chris stood there for a few moments. His gaze never truly left Naomi's face, as though he still needed to make sure she had really opened her eyes and that he wasn't simply caught in a dream too beautiful to be real.
