Naomi's words were immediately met with a tight embrace from Chris. It prompted the doctor, who had been standing a few steps away from the bed the entire time, to finally walk over.
"My apologies, Mr. Chris, but could you let go of the patient for a moment?"
Chris looked slightly startled. He slowly released his embrace, then flashed an unapologetic grin. "Sorry. I missed my fiancée so much."
A faint smile returned to the face of the doctor treating Naomi, but his expression quickly became professional again as he pulled a small flashlight from the pocket of his white coat.
"I'm sorry, Miss Naomi," he said gently. "Can we continue with the examination?"
Naomi let out a quiet sigh. "I just woke up, and I'm already being examined."
"Because we want to make sure you've truly come back."
That brief exchange gradually lightened the atmosphere, which had only moments before been filled with quiet sobs.
The doctor raised the small flashlight toward Naomi's face. "Look at me."
Naomi complied. The bright light made her squint slightly, but her eyes followed the doctor's hand movements without difficulty. After checking her pupillary reflexes several times, the doctor gave a small nod to the nurse standing beside him.
"Her pupils are responding normally."
The nurse immediately recorded the examination results while the doctor moved on to check Naomi's pulse and blood pressure. The blood pressure cuff slowly inflated, filling the quiet room with a soft hissing sound.
Cale and Chris remained standing beside the bed without saying a word. Both of them watched the doctor's every movement, their breaths still feeling restrained.
A few moments later, the doctor looked at Naomi again. "Now I'd like to make sure your orientation is still intact. Could you tell me your full name?"
Naomi looked at him with a blank expression, as though the question was far too easy. "Naomi Devereux."
"Good. Your date of birth?"
Naomi answered without hesitation. The doctor nodded again.
"And... who are they?" he asked, glancing toward Cale and Chris.
Naomi looked from one man to the other. "That's Mr. Cale." Her gaze then shifted to Chris. "And that one," the corners of her lips lifted into a faint smile again, "is my fiancé, who looks like he hasn't slept in a week."
Chris let out a short breath and gave a slight shake of his head. Even in such a weakened condition, Naomi still found the energy to tease him.
The doctor smiled as well. "Your memory is very good."
"I still remember my own name, Doc," Naomi retorted.
