Chapter 233
Ísabella’s POV
The moment I saw Alessia standing in the doorway, every bit of calm I had managed to gather over the past few hours vanished.
It wasn’t much calm to begin with but was enough to keep me breathing, enough to keep myself from falling apart eve minutes. I had barely managed to convince myself that Mateo still needed me. That I still had a reason to keep going.
But the second I saw her, something cold and ugly twisted inside my chest.
Beside me, Dominic went rigid.
I noticed it immediately as his entire body tensed and his gaze flickered to me first, as though he was trying to gauge my reaction before deciding what to do next.
Concern immediately appeared on his face, because, for once, he knew. He knew exactly how little I wanted to see her.
Especially now when I was lying in a hospital bed after losing my child.
Dominic stood.
“Alessia-”
Before he could say another word, she interrupted him, her expression softening immediately, or at least pretending to.
“Please,” her voice was quiet, gentle, carefully controlled. “I won’t stay long.”
I looked away immediately, deliberately.
I couldn’t stand looking at her, couldn’t stand her face, couldn’t stand her voice, couldn’t stand the fact that she was breathing the same air as me.
The room fell silent for a moment.
Then Alessia spoke again. “Isabella, I know this is a very difficult time for you.”
I kept staring at the window, not sparing her another glance.
“I know there aren’t any words that can make this better.”
Still, I gave no response.
“I’ve been through something similar myself.”
My jaw tightened.
“I understand how devastating this kind of loss can be.”
Something about those words made my stomach turn. Because even now, even after everything. I couldn’t shake the feeling that none of this was genuine. That she was just performing here, acting, playing the role of a grieving, sympathetic woman, an understanding woman.
God.
And she was good at it too. Good enough that Dominic still couldn’t see through her. Good enough that everyone around her seemed convinced she was some kind of saint.
Chapter 233
I wasn’t, not for a second.
Dominic shifted uncomfortably beside me.
I could practically feel his uncertainty, his confusion, his desire to keep the peace, his desire to protect me, his inabili figure out which one mattered more right now.
Alessia continued.
I’m just here to offer my condolences. I’ll leave immediately afterward.”
Still, I said nothing, not because I didn’t have anything to say.
Quite the opposite, actually. I had far too much to say.
Enough anger. Enough grief. Enough hatred. Enough suspicion. Enough accusations. Enough pain.
If I opened my mouth, I wasn’t entirely sure I would be able to stop.
And what would be the point?
My baby would still be gone. My life would still be shattered. Nothing would change.
So, I remained silent.
Alessia slowly approached my bed, I could hear her footsteps, could feel Dominic watching both of us worried and unsure.
When she finally stopped beside me, her voice became softer, almost intimate. “I’m very sorry this happened.”
I stared stubbornly at the wall.
“I truly wish there was something I could do to ease your pain.”
Lie.
I hope you recover quickly.”
Another lie.
I hope you find peace.”
The biggest lie of all.
Because if there was one thing I was certain of, it was that peace was the last thing Alessia wanted for me.
The room remained silent.
Then I felt her lean closer and the movement instantly made every/muscle in my body tense.
For a brief second, I thought she intended to leave.
Instead, her arms wrapped around me in a shallow. performative hug
And then, she whispered, so quietly that Dominic couldn’t possibly hear.
Talready took one child away from you.
My blood tuned to ice at her words just as her lips brushed near my ear.
Chapter 233
“Be careful you don’t lose another.”
For one horrifying second, my brain simply stopped working.
The words didn’t make sense, not immediately.
Then they did.
And a wave of cold fury unlike anything I’d ever experienced swept through me.
Mateo.
The threat was about Mateo and she wasn’t even trying to be subtle about it. It was intentional, deliberate
A warning.
I slowly turned my head.
Our eyes met.
And for the first time since she’d entered the room, I looked directly at her, really looked at her, at the beautiful face, the innocent expression, the concern she wore so convincingly.
And all I could think was-Monster.
Not because she looked like one. She didn’t. Monsters rarely did. Which was exactly why they were so dangerous.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I smiled, a small smile, one that startled even me. Because there wasn’t a single ounce of warmth in it..
“If anything ever happens to my son…” My voice was terrifyingly soft. “….they’ll never find enough of the person responsible to bury.”
For the first time, Alessia looked genuinely surprised.ot scared.
Dominic frowned immediately. “What?”
Alessia recovered quickly, far too quickly. She offered him a sad smile. “The grief is speaking.”
My gaze never left hers. “No.” I said quietly. “It isn’t.”
The smile vanished from her face but only for a fraction of a second. Then it returned, polished and perfect.
“I’m sorry for your loss, Isabella.”
And just like that, she stepped back. The performance was complete. The mask firmly back in place.
A few moments later she was gone.
The door closed softly behind her.
Silence filled the room again.
stared at it for several long seconds.
Then finally, I looked towards Dominic. I never want to see that woman again.”
The fury in my voice surprised even me. It was cold, controlled and absolute.
Chapter 233
Dominic remained silent, which told me he knew something had happened.
Maybe not what. But something.
I swallowed hard. “If she ever comes near me or Mateo again, I want her removed.”
Dominic nodded immediately. “Okay.”
There was no argument, no defense, no explanation.
That alone spoke volumes.
I looked away towards the window again.
“She’s a liar.” My voice shook slightly. “A manipulator. And a bitch.”
Dominic didn’t disagree, wisely keeping his mouth shut. Good. Very good.
“If she comes anywhere near my son ever again,” I clenched my jaw. “I will make her regret it.”
The words weren’t loud. But they carried enough conviction that even Dominic looked slightly startled.
