I didn’t realize how much I’d been thinking about her until I was already looking for her the moment I came back to the house in the evening.
It had been one of those days today, the kind that never stopped pulling at me from every direction. Meetings, calls, threats that hadn’t quite become violence yet but felt close enough to smell. I should have
been exhausted.
Instead, all I could think about was Isabella.
About her laugh from that morning, about the way she’d looked at me over breakfast, that softness in her eyes that hadn’t been there in years. And don’t even get me started on how many times I had to get my mind off of the events of last night before I got a boner in the middle of a meeting.
It had been absolute perfection. Actually, no. If there was anything beyond the most perfect of things in this world, it was a thousand times better than that and then some, that’s what it had been like for me.
I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed having her in my arms, having her moan my name as I made her cum until it had happened again.
Our sexual chemistry had always been explosive, but reunion after years apart had made it even more so.
I could only hope that it had been the same way for her.
By the time I stepped into the dining room, she was already there with Maria, who was setting the table.
Isa was standing near the counter, sleeves rolled up, hair loose over her shoulders.
My chest tightened at the sight. So domestic. So mine.
I crossed the room without even thinking and wrapped my arms around her from behind.
She stiffened for a heartbeat, then relaxed just a fraction.
I pressed a kiss to her temple, breathing her in. Clean soap, something faintly floral. Her.
“I missed you,” I murmured.
Maria paused mid-plate and smiled to herself before pointedly turning away. “I’ll just give you two a moment,” she said, already retreating.
Isa shifted in my arms, trying to pull away. I loosened my hands but didn’t let her go completely. She turned in the circle of my hands until he was facing me.
“Looks like someone had a long day,” she teased quietly.
“I did,” I admitted. “But that’s not why.”

She tilted her head slightly. “Oh?”
“I really missed you today.”
The words surprised even me. Not that I’d missed her, but that I’d admitted it to her so candidly. In our world, men weren’t supposed to show affection so openly, or express their feelings to their woman as candidly as I’d just done. But I didn’t care about any of that. I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her all day, and I wanted her to know that.
I felt her still in my arms, her eyes widening a little as she looked up at me.
She looked adorable like that, with a dear caught in headlights look on her face. That paired with the light blush coating her cheeks, and I wanted to lean down and kiss her right away.
Before I could do that, though, Mateo came running into the room.
“Mama!” he called. “I’m starving!”
Isa tried to step away, but I tightened my arms just a bit. Nuh-uh. I wasn’t letting her go so easily. Besides, I was curious as to how Mateo would react seeing me hugging his mother.
He skidded to a stop when he saw us, his eyes lighting up.
“Group hug!”
He barreled into us, wrapping his small arms around our legs. I laughed, bending down with Isa so we could all be on the same level.
For a few seconds, it was just us. Warm. Whole. A family. Our small family of three.
But when I looked at Isabella, I saw something flicker across her face.
Distance.
Worry.
Something she wasn’t saying.
I straightened and lifted Mateo into my arms instead, settling him into his chair just as Maria brought out the food.
Dinner was loud, as it usually was when Mateo was in a good mood. He told us about school, about something funny a friend had said, about a story he wanted me to read to him later.
I tried to draw Isa into the conversation, but she only smiled faintly, her eyes drifting away as if her thoughts were somewhere else entirely.
When dinner was done, I took Mateo upstairs, helped him brush his teeth and then read him his favorite book. Isa came in for a moment to kiss him good night before going back to her room. She didn’t stay like I wanted her to. Mateo fell asleep halfway through, clutching the corner of the blanket.

I stood there for a moment, watching him breathe.
