Chapter 114

“Ms. Carter, what a coincidence! Just getting off work?”

Mia: “??”

Ethan: “…”

Leo didn’t just lower the passenger window; he lowered the rear window on Ethan’s side as well.

Mia looked up and locked eyes with Ethan.

The sudden encounter and the locked gaze created a wave of awkwardness that spread between them.

Leo belatedly realized something was wrong.

Yesterday morning, when he had left the office, Mia had already reported to the Logistics Department. He had later heard that Evelyn Ford had cleared everything up and that the scandal had nothing to do with Mia-though Mia had apparently gotten into another argument with Chloe.

As for the rumor that Mia had refused Ethan’s offer to cancel the transfer, Leo had heard it mentioned but hadn’t

believed it for a second.

How could Mia possibly refuse?

‘Uh…” Leo stammered. “Stay safe on the road. Goodbye.”

Just as Mia adjusted her mindset to offer a polite greeting, Leo dropped those words, stepped on the gas,

away.

Mia’s lips parted slightly, her intended greeting turning into a whispered, “Goodbye.”

and sped

The Maybach pulled away, the wind from its wake tossing Mia’s long hair into a mess. She instinctively watched he departing car. In the rearview mirror, she could vaguely see the blurred silhouette of the man’s features.

An unidentifiable emotion flickered in her heart.

Just then, a taxi pulled up in front of her. She snapped out of it, got in and gave the driver the address of the restaurant where she was meeting Evelyn.

Mia wasn’t particularly close to Evelyn, and their previous meetings had all been for business. This was their first private meeting, and surprisingly, the atmosphere was incredibly harmonious.

Mia had never met a client of this caliber privately before. When she first sat down, she felt a bit stiff, but Evelyn’s bright, straightforward personality quickly chased the tension away.

‘Don’t be nervous. We aren’t talking shop and we aren’t fighting. Just treat me like a friend.”

Evelyn had a head of permed, wool-like curls and wore a purple turtleneck sweater. She looked very elegant and wealthy.

Mia relaxed slightly. “Mrs. Ford…”

“Call me Evelyn,” she interrupted. “I won’t call you Ms. Carter anymore, either. I’ll just call you Mia. Let’s be

friends.”

Since childhood, Mia had been reserved. In all those years at the orphanage, her only friend was the extroverted Nina Torres. Whether in school or at work, she hadn’t made any other close connections.

‘It’s an honor,” Mia said.

Evelyn chuckled, covering her mouth. “People who know you realize you’re just naturally quiet. People who don’t would think you’re unwilling to be my friend and that you’re just brushing me off with polite nonsense.”

Mia instinctively shook her head. “I didn’t mean it that way.”

‘I know.” Evelyn took a sip of her drink. “Actually, I’m from the north. I met Marcus online, came to Sunbrook to meet him in person, and then stayed there. Southerners talk in circles and act all refined-it doesn’t suit me. It suits someone like you much better, actually. Are you from Northbrook?”

Mia shook her head. “Probably not.”

Evelyn paused. “What do you mean, ‘probably’?”

I grew up in an orphanage. Aunt May said the previous director found me on a road while going up a mountain to ɔray for peace. Locals don’t usually go to that mountain.”

Mia answered honestly.

Evelyn was stunned. “You’re an orphan?”

Yes.” Mia nodded, then gave a small smile and a shake of her head. “It’s okay. We’re friends. Even if you hadn’t

sked, I should have told you.”

You’re amazing. Coming from an orphanage and becoming the secretary for the CEO of Bayview… I asked round about you, and I heard…”

Admiration and respect gradually filled Evelyn’s eyes.

Mia’s usually quiet nature opened up under Evelyn’s lead, and they began to talk more.

ust as the conversation was reaching its peak, several figures suddenly appeared beside their table.

t was Miranda Hale and Sandra Bennett. Behind them followed a tearful and aggrieved Chloe Bennett.
