Ethan paused. His dark eyes swept over Mia, taking in her slightly pale complexion and the trench coat she wore.

He glanced down at Chloe. Go ahead and start without me. I’ll be there in a minute.

But Ethan- Chloe whined, her nails digging into his sleeve.

“I said, I’ll be a minute,he repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Chloe shot Mia a death glare before reluctantly walking toward the VIP dining room.

Follow me,Ethan commanded coldly, turning toward the empty executive lounge.

Mia followed him inside. Ethan immediately lit a cigarette, leaning his tall frame against the mahogany table. The sharp scent of tobacco and his signature cedar cologne filled the small space.

Five minutes,he said, checking his Rolex.

I need you to approve my resignation,Mia cut straight to the chase. I gave it to Leo days ago.

Ethan frowned. He pulled the cigarette from his thin lips. What resignation?

I’m leaving Bayview Holdings.

The temperature in the room plummeted. Ethan stared at her, his jaw ticking. He had been so distracted by the overseas trip that he hadn’t even opened that envelope.

Now, hearing the words out loud, an irrational surge of anger flared in his chest.

Why is she so desperate to run?

Give me a reason,Ethan demanded, his voice dangerously low as he took a slow step toward her. His massive frame instantly made the room feel suffocatingly small.

Mia swallowed hard, taking a step back until her spine hit the door. The branch manager position isn’t for me. It’s been six months, and I-*

Then move back to Headquarters,Ethan interrupted sharply, closing the distance between them. He was so close she could feel the heat radiating off his chest. Stop playing these childish games, Mia.

It’s not a game! I want to quit entirely-

Before she could finish, a heavy, greasy smell of cooking oil from the nearby cafeteria wafted through the ventilation. Combined with the thick cigarette smoke, it hit Mia like a wrecking ball.

A violent wave of nausea surged.

Mia clamped a hand over her mouth, her eyes widening in panic. She couldn’t throw up here. Not in front of him.

She violently shoved his chest away, yanked the door open, and sprinted blindly down the hall toward the restrooms.

Dry heaves. Cold sweats. By the time Mia dragged herself out of the bathroom ten minutes later, she was completely exhausted. Her legs felt like jelly.

She walked back to the lounge, ready to demand he sign the paper.

But Ethan was gone.

Instead, Leo was standing there, holding a freshly printed corporate folder.

Ms. Carter, are you okay?Leo asked, looking concerned.

Where is he?Mia rasped. Did he sign it?

Leo gave her a highly apologetic look and slowly shook his head.

I’m sorry, Mia. He completely rejected your resignation. Instead, he just authorized a mandatory executive transfer.

Mia’s heart dropped. A transfer? To where?
