Chapter 128
Mia, wearing a black uniform, stood in a corner of the banquet hall as music filled the air. She watched the photos looping on the large screen.
Ethan’s features were deep and defined, his gaze filled with an unprecedented tenderness. Chloe leaned against him, her smile radiant, looking like a woman completely immersed in happiness.
Guests stopped in front of the photos, full of praise.
If Chloe wanted to escape the rumors of being “ugly” and truly stand tall, getting engaged to Ethan was the most direct and effective way. Now that she had transformed into Ethan’s fiancée, everyone could only be green with envy. Who would dare say a bad word about her now?
The engagement ceremony was about to begin, and the guests had all arrived.
Mia spotted Jaxon Rivers.
Jaxon was wearing a flamboyant light pink suit with white leather shoes. His hair was slicked back and perfectly groomed as he mingled effortlessly through the hall.
Without realizing it, he drifted over to Mia’s side.
This time, he didn’t avoid her. He walked straight up to her. “Don’t worry. I’ve changed my mind. I’m not doing anything.”
Mia looked at him warily. She wasn’t afraid of him making a scene publicly; she was afraid of him doing something bad in silence.
‘Don’t look at me like that. I just think… the story becomes much more interesting once Ethan is officially engaged.”
axon was gloating. It would be pure chaos if Ethan got engaged and then the news broke that he was about to become a “clueless stepdad”!
Mia withdrew her gaze. “Mhm. You’re absolutely right.”
She felt both helpless and amused by Jaxon’s rapidly changing whims. But fortunately, he had changed his mind.
Today’s engagement party was destined to be the center of attention and go off without a hitch.
Ethan and Chloe were getting engaged.
Tomorrow, Mia would go to the director and hand in her resignation.
She could finally leave.
“Mia!”
Zoe ran over, out of breath, pointing upstairs. “Ms. Bennett wants you to go up and see her.”
At that moment, Chloe was upstairs in the dressing room. There were only five minutes left before the ceremony began.
“Is something wrong?” Mia asked.

Zoe looked displeased. “Just go if you’re told to go! Stop talking so much!”

There was a hint of jealousy hidden in her expression, as if some good fortune were about to fall on Mia. But when it came to Chloe, how could anything be good for Mia?
Mia eventually went upstairs and knocked on the dressing room door.
Chloe was wearing a white beaded gown, encrusted with priceless gems from the chest to the waistline. It sparkled under the lights, so bright it was hard to look at.
She stood there, noble and arrogant, looking down at Mia.
‘Mia, I want you to support me as I walk downstairs.”
‘Ms. Bennett, that doesn’t follow protocol,” Mia refused calmly. “It should be Mr. or Mrs. Bennett who escorts
you.”
Chloe arched an eyebrow, her tone leaving no room for argument. “I want you to do it.”
Mia went silent.
The rules of the wealthy were the only rules that mattered. It didn’t matter if Chloe asked Mia or a beggar to do it; no one could stop her.
‘I want you to watch with your own eyes as Ethan marries me.”
Mia wanted to remind her that this was only an engagement, not a wedding. But seeing the needle-like gaze Chloe fixed on her, she nodded. “It is my honor to witness the two of
you together.”
‘It’s time!” someone shouted from outside the door.
Whatever Chloe was about to say was interrupted. She raised her arm.
Mia stepped forward, supporting Chloe’s arm with both hands. She escorted her toward the staircase in a submissive, bowed posture.
