His Secret Baby: Six Months After Divorce (Mia and Ethan) novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Jaxon was never a match for Ethan, so he usually settled for the next best thing: harassing Ethan’s people.

Specifically, Mia.

Mia pivoted, trying to slip out through the back door.

But Jaxon spotted her instantly. He shoved past the crowd and chased her down.

Mia had barely cleared the ballroom when he cornered her in a quiet hallway.

Well, well Mia Carter. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Ethan was the type to keep his mouth shut and let his lethal, sharp looks do the talking.

Jaxon, on the other hand, was pretty as a picture but had a big mouth that seriously needed a punch.

I thought you were fallen out of favor and cast aside. What are you doing back in the lion’s den?

Mia was Ethan’s right hand. Everyone in the Northbrook business scene knew her.

Six months ago, she’d been shipped off to a branch office as General Manager. It was a promotion on paper, but a demotion in reality. Everyone assumed she’d pissed Ethan off or screwed up big time.

Work stuff,Mia said, her voice cool.

She gave him a short nod. Mr. Rivers, I have things to attend to. Excuse me.

Jaxon slammed his elbow against the wall, pinning her into the corner. Look at Ethan over there. So busy I can’t even get a word in. Why don’t you have a drink for him?

He snatched the cup of warm water from her hand and shoved a glass of red wine at her. Drain it. Every drop.

In Northbrook, the Rivers were second only to the Hales. Jaxon was a heavyweight the kind of guy who could make the ground shake if he wanted to.

She’d played his games before. To keep the peace and stay professional, she’d usually just suck it up and drink.

But not today.

Mr. Rivers, I’m not feeling well. I’m on medication, so I can’t drink.

Jaxon didn’t buy it for a second.

You look absolutely radiant. Where exactly does it hurt?He leaned in, his eyes narrowing. What’s the matter? Did Ethan give you he finally ready to go to war with me?

He was being aggressive, crowding her space and pushing the glass so close it almost touched her lips.

orders? Is

Mia knew the look in his eyes. If she refused again, he’d have no problem prying her mouth open and forcing the wine down her throat

The ballroom doors were wide open. From their spot in the hallway, they had a perfect view of Ethan.

Ethan glanced over and caught them right then.

Their eyes locked for a split second. Ethan’s narrow eyes tightened, cold and sharp, before he looked away and went back to his conversation like she didn’t even exist.

Look at that. Ethan doesn’t give a damn about you. He’s too busy playing house with his little future bride. Why the hell are you still working for a guy like that?

Jaxon leaned in, his eyes on Mia. It makes my blood boil just watching it

You’re joking, Jaxon,Mia said, her voice raspy. I’m just an employee. I can’t compare to Ms. Bennett.

Tell

you

what.Jaxon leaned down until they were eyetoeye. Work for me. I’ll double your salary. Right now.

Mia nodded, playing along. I’m honored you’d want to poach me, Mr. Rivers.

Jaxon was the type of guy you had to handle with kid gloves. If you pushed back, he’d just dig his heels in deeper and never let it go.

A second later, a business card appeared in front of her face.

Take it. Report to Riverside Corporation

Mia looked up, meeting his smug, grinning eyes.

He was smiling, but he wasn’t kidding.

If Jaxon stole Mia away, it would be a massive slap in Ethan’s face.

It would be the first time in his life he actually managed to humiliate the great Ethan Hale.

Of course he was serious. He was dead serious.
