Inside the grand ballroom, the charity gala was in full swing.

Ethan was the undisputed center of the universe. Everywhere he went, a crowd of billionaires and politicians followed. He looked devastatingly handsome in his tailored tuxedo, radiating a cold, untouchable dominance.

Ethan,Chloe cooed, sliding up to him and hooking her arm intimately through his.

She flashed her dazzling smile at the surrounding CEOs, playing the perfect future wife. Everyone is teasing me, Ethan. They keep asking when we’re finally getting married.

Ethan’s lived into a polite smile, but the warmth never reached his amber eyes. Soon. You’ll all get an invite.

The crowd erupted into congratulations. Chloe beamed, practically floating. She scanned the room, eagerly waiting for Mia to arrive in that hideous neon monstrosity so the entire high society could laugh her out of the building.

Suddenly, the lively chatter near the grand entrance died down.

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. The crowd physically parted, making way for the figure standing at the top of the velvet stairs.

Good godis that Mr. Hale’s secretary?!a CEO whispered, his wine glass hovering halfway to his mouth.

Ethan frowned. He turned his headand his breath completely caught in his throat.

Mia Carter stood at the top of the stairs.

She was wearing black. But the tacky, neon ribbons were completely gone.

In the brief twenty minutes she had in the hotel locker room, Mia had taken a pair of sharp tailoring scissors to the sixtythousanddollar dress. She had violently ripped off every single ribbon, slashing the fabric away to create a breathtaking, asymmetrical masterpiece.

The dark silk clung to her delicate curves like a second skin. The daring, jagged cuts left her entire back completely bare, exposing the porcelain expanse of her spine down to the sharp, seductive dip of her waist.

With her long, raven hair cascading down one shoulder and zero jewelry to distract from her raw, lethal beauty, she looked like a dark, seductive goddess.

Next to her, Chloe’s delicate purple princess dress suddenly looked childish, cheap, and entirely forgettable.

Chloe’s face drained of all color. Her manicured nails dug so hard into Ethan’s arm that she almost drew blood. How?! How did she do that?!

But Ethan didn’t even notice the pain.

His dark eyes were glued to Mia. A terrifying, violent storm of pure, unadulterated possessiveness erupted in his chest. His jaw clenched tight enough to crack teeth.

Every single man in the ballroom was staring at Mia’s bare back. They were looking at his exwife. They were undressing her with their eyes.

The primal, feral urge to rip off his tuxedo jacket, wrap it tightly around her, and drag her out of this room hit him with blinding force.

Mia walked gracefully down the stairs, her eyes downcast, and stopped a few feet away from Ethan.

Mr. Hale, she greeted politely, pretending not to notice the suffocating, heavy tension radiating off his towering frame.

Ethan’s eyes darkened into pitchblack pools of fury. He took a slow step toward her, the words What the hell are you wearing burning on his

tongue.

But before he could speak, a flamboyant, incredibly arrogant voice cut through the heavy air.

Well, well, well. If it isn’t the most beautiful woman in Northbrook.

Mia turned. Strutting toward them in a loud floral suit, holding a glass of vodka and wearing a wicked, predator’s grin, was Jaxon Rivers. The heir to the Rivers family. And Ethan Hale’s absolute worst enemy.
