In the dimly lit corridor, the cigarette between the man’s thin lips flickered.

The faint glow outlined his sharp features, but his expression remained obscured in the shadows. His presence was so overwhelming that Mia Carter noticed him almost instantly. Once she looked, it was hard to turn away.

‘Mr. Hale.”

Snapping back to reality, Mia closed her office door and walked toward Ethan. Her flat shoes made almost no sound on the floor. Because she was tall, the dress clung to her figure perfectly, giving her a youthful, vibrant energy that made her look like a college student.

‘Mhm.”

A low grunt escaped Ethan’s throat. A ring of smoke drifted from his lips, momentarily veiling his face. He smoked in silence, his expression unreadable.

After a few seconds of dead silence, Mia shifted her weight and headed for the elevators. Once inside, she looked up. Ethan was still standing there, smoking. Despite how out of place he seemed on this floor at this hour, he carried an air of absolute belonging.

As if he were supposed to be there. As if he had always been there.

The elevator doors began to slide shut. Just as they were about to close completely, a pair of well-defined hands eached out and blocked them.

Mia’s heart skipped a beat as the man stepped inside. The cramped space was instantly flooded with his scent-a nix of faint tobacco and sandalwood. She retreated into the corner, keeping as much distance as possible.

The elevator descended in total silence.

After what felt like an eternity, a phone rang. It was Ethan’s. He pulled it from his pocket and answered. His tense

acial features softened, and his voice turned gentle. “Chloe.”

Ethan, aren’t you home yet?” Chloe Bennett’s voice drifted through the line.

There was some business at the office. I’m working late.”

Chloe made a soft sound of agreement. “I haven’t seen you in days. When are you coming to see me?”

Tomorrow. I’ll come pick you up.”

Great! What are we eating?”

You choose.”

Ethan’s tone was filled with a rare tenderness, while Chloe sounded shy and playful. Their conversation filled the elevator, slowly suffocating Mia.

Ethan stole a glance at her through the reflective wall of the elevator. She was standing perfectly still, her long dark hair tied back, her expression neutral.

‘Ding. The doors opened.

Ethan didn’t move. Mia brushed past him, exiting the elevator first and heading for her car without looking back.

Once inside the car, she tossed her bag onto the passenger seat. Her palms were marked with deep indentations from her nails. She didn’t seem to notice. She started the engine and sped away.

Ethan watched her retreating car, his expression gradually sharpening into a cold blade. After ending the call, he stepped out of the elevator, climbed into his Maybach, and drove off.

Back at home, Mia notified her team that they would be having lunch with the Riverside team the following day. She booked a large private room at the Northbrook Executive Restaurant for 11:00 AM.

She had originally been worried that meeting Jaxon Rivers for lunch might conflict with Ethan’s schedule. Now, she didn’t have to worry at all. Ethan would be with Chloe tomorrow.

By the time she finished handling everything, it was nearly midnight.

Now that she was in her second trimester, Mia’s morning sickness had vanished, and her appetite was returning. However, she was more lethargic than ever. The moment her head hit the pillow, she was out.

The Northbrook Executive Restaurant was located right in the center of the business district. It only took Mia and her team ten minutes to walk there.
