Leo had a few too many drinks, so Ethan told him to just stay at the hotel for the night.

That left Ethan and Chloe to walk out of the lobby together. Mia hopped out of the car and moved fast to open the door for them.

She’d already changed out of her gown. She was back in a black pencil skirt and a white shirt with a pink diamond collar bar.

She’d been in such a rush she forgot her grey wool coat. The wind nipped at her, pulling her collar open and showing off her sharp, sexy

collarbones.

Chloe Bennett felt a sharp pang of jealousy. She yanked on Ethan Hale’s arm, forcing him to stop in his tracks.

Ethan, I’m so exhausted, she pouted, her voice trailing off.

Usually, when people covered for Ethan’s drinks, he’d make sure they were dropped off at home first before driving himself back.

Ethan gripped the car door, his expression unreadable. Get in,he told Chloe.

Once she was settled inside, Ethan slammed the door shut. He turned to Mia Carter, his voice cold and commanding. Take an Uber home.

Yes, sir.The words had barely left Mia’s lips before the biting night air rushed into her lungs. She felt a chill go straight to her bones.

She walked around to the driver’s side, grabbed her coat and laptop bag, and stepped back onto the sidewalk.

Chloe rolled down the window, a smug, mocking smile playing on her lips as she stared Mia down.

Ethan, Ms. Carter is a woman alone. Don’t you think it’s a little dangerous for her to be out this late?Chloe Bennett asked, her voice dripping with fake concern.

Ethan Hale stood by the driver’s side door, his eyes shifting toward Mia Carter at her words.

Mia stood frozen in the wind. The gust pressed her shirt tight against her skin, highlighting a waist so small a man could wrap his hand all the way around it.

With her delicate features and that tiny, pale face, she looked far too fragile to be out here. Seeing a woman like her alone in the dead of nightit was the kind of beauty that made men think dangerous thoughts.

Ethan’s brows pulled together. His instincts as a boss told him he couldn’t just leave her stranded.

But

Mia offered a thin, practiced smile. I appreciate the concern, Ms. Bennett, but an Uber will be perfectly safe.

Let’s go then, Ethan,Chloe said immediately, hitting the switch to roll up the window.

Goodnight, Mia said, her professional mask never slipping for a second.

Seeing that she was fine with it, Ethan ducked into the car and shut the door.

Through the tinted glass, Mia watched Chloe lean in close to him, chirping away about God knows what.

The Maybach peeled away, leaving a draft of cold air that sent Mia’s long hair whipping across her face.

She walked to the curb and waited. Ten minutes passed, and not a single taxi cruised by. She gave up and pulled out her phone to call an Uber.

It took another thirty minutes before the car finally showed up.

Half an hour later, she finally reached her apartment complex.

As she was trudging up the stairs to her place, her phone started buzzing. It was Nina Torres.

Mia, did you finish quitting yet? I’ve already figured out where we’re going next.

Nina Torres had grown up in the same orphanage as her.

They were thick as thieves so close that if Mia was leaving Northbrook, Nina was coming with her.

Where to?Mia asked, breathless from climbing the stairs.

Emerald Bay. It’s like spring all year round. Perfect for raising my kid and perfect for your postpartum recovery. Once you’re done there, we’ll head straight to the coast for New Year’s.
