“Sure. I’ll drop them off tomorrow,” Nina said, her voice softening as she cooed at her baby. “Hear that, buddy? We’re taking medicine to your godmother so she can give you a little future girlfriend.”

Mia couldn’t help but smile. “Don’t bring my godson out. It’s freezing.”

The Northbrook winter made Nina want to run away.

But for Mia, it was Ethan who made her want to run.

Both of them were done. They were getting out.

New Year’s was only two weeks away.

Mia planned to find an opening to bring up her resignation with Ethan again.

If she put it in now, she could leave right after the holidays. If she waited until after the New Year, she’d be stuck for another month just to handle the handover.

This was the second time she was asking. Ethan wouldn’t keep forcing her to stay, right?

But the next morning, the second she stepped into the office, Mia was dragged straight into a conference room. They were starting a meeting for the Government Partnership Initiative.

Riverside was determined to win this project at all costs. Mia had been tracking it for a while.

It was basically a done deal, but Bayview just had to stick their nose in at the last second.

Now it was a mad dash drafting proposals, vetting partners, and sucking up to city hall.

Ethan was swamped.

Mia was run off her feet, too. Forget mentioning her resignation she didn’t even have time for a sip of water.

3:00 PM.

“Mia, go get me a latte.”

Chloe Bennett barked the order over the intercom and cut the line before Mia could even breathe.

Chloe was alone in the office.

Ethan was too busy for her to pull this crap while he was watching.

But she was still fuming over Mia stealing her spotlight the other night.

She’d waited for the exact moment Ethan stepped out to start bossing Mia around.

Mia had a massive deadline to hit before the end of the day.

She hesitated for a second, then stood up and headed down to the caf

“One hot milk, please,” Mia said. After ordering, she found a seat and called Ethan

He picked up almost immediately. His deep voice rumbled in her ear

“What is it?”

Mia knew he was in the middle of a meeting. She put on her best ‘struggling employee‘ voice and said, “I’m sorry for interrupting your meeting. Mr. Hale. Chloe asked me to get her a coffee, but they’re out of what she wanted. Could you check with her and see what else she’d like?”

Dead silence on the other end.
