Mia stood frozen by the elevator for a long moment before finally forcing herself to go back to her desk.

She’d barely sat down when the other half of the door slammed open.

Chloe stormed out, eyes swimming with tears. She aggressively flailed her bag, knocking the hot milk on Mia’s desk to the floor.

She didn’t even look back as she vanished.

The milk bled into the carpet, steam still rising from the white stain.

Mia stood up to pick up the cup, then grabbed some paper towels to soak up the mess.

Suddenly, a pair of polished black leather shoes stepped into her line of sight. Sharp, tailored suit pants clung to a pair of long, powerful legs.

A heavy shadow fell over her, pinning her in place.

Mia tossed the soaked towels into the trash before finally looking up.

“Sorry for the trouble, Mr. Hale.”

Ethan looked pissed. He was clearly still reeling from the blowout with Chloe.

And Mia was the one who had triggered the whole thing.

“Go to the meeting with Leo,” he said, his voice tight. “Give me the report tonight. I’ve got something to take care of.”

His suit jacket was draped over his arm, and his car keys were already gripped in his hand.

It was obvious. He was going after Chloe.

Mia nodded. “Understood.”

Ethan rushed off, disappearing down the hall without a single glance back.

Chloe Bennett left Bayview and drove straight to the Hale estate.

When she arrived, Miranda Hale had just woken up from her nap and was chatting with Ethan’s grandparents in the living room.

The second Chloe walked in, the smile vanished from Mrs. Hale Sr.’s face.

Miranda, however, took one look at Chloe’s red, puffy eyes and felt a sharp pang of sympathy.

“Chloe, honey, what happened? Who’s been bothering you?”

Miranda held out her arms, and Chloe immediately threw herself into them.

“Aunt Miranda, Ethan is being so cruel to me.”

Miranda’s face hardened instantly. “What did he do? Tell me everything!”

Chloe conveniently left out the part about Mia being swamped with work. She twisted the story, making it sound like she’d simply asked for a coffee and Ethan had snapped at her for no reason.

“She’s just a secretary,” Miranda snapped, her voice full of disdain. “Fetching coffee is her job. In fact, she should be at your beck and call! What’s the problem with that?”

The moment Mia’s name was mentioned, Miranda’s mood soured.

Then she paused, realizing something didn’t add up. “Wait, I thought Mia was at the branch office? What the hell is she doing at headquarters?

Chloe put on her best “wronged‘ face. “She didn’t want to stay at the branch anymore, so she asked for a transfer back. Ethan agreed to it”

Miranda’s temper flared. “This is too much! She’s the one who insisted on leaving, and now she thinks she can just stroll back whenever she wants? Who does that little secretary think she is!?”

“Why are you yelling?” Mrs. Hale Sr. frowned, her voice sharp with annoyance. “If you want to know what’s going on, why don’t you just ask your golden boy?”

“Mom, this is all Mia Carter’s fault, Miranda Hale snapped. “What does this have to do with Ethan?”

Miranda had always resented how the old lady coddled Mia. Now that the subject was out in the open, she decided to stop holding back.
