“Sir? Are you the patient’s family?”

The background noise on the other end faded, and a nurse’s voice became clear. “The patient passed out while on an IV drip. Can you come down here?”

Family?

Ethan quickly categorized Mia as a ‘patient,’ but he couldn’t bring himself to associate the term ‘family’ with himself.

He was about to snap a ‘no’ when he remembered Mia was an orphan. She had no one else.

“Which hospital?” He lowered his gaze, staring at a small, prickly cactus on Mia’s desk.

Northbrook General.”

The nurse hurried him along. “Please get here as soon as you can. The patient’s situation is specific, and we need to discuss her condition with you in detail.”

Delicate? Ethan caught the word immediately. He gave a short affirmative and hung up.

Leo, get the car ready. We’re going to Northbrook General.”

Ethan turned back into his office and grabbed his coat.

Mr. Hale, you have a mountain of work waiting for you!”

Leo looked frantic. “We have that overseas meeting this afternoon!”

Ethan didn’t slow his pace. He stopped in front of the elevator and checked his watch.

Push the meeting to tonight.”

Leo could only nod. “Yes, sir.”

The Maybach peeled out of the Bayview Holdings garage, tearing toward Northbrook General…

By the time Mia had grabbed an Uber to the hospital, her fever had spiked past 102.

It was a severe viral infection. Her vitals were a mess, so the doctor hooked her up to an IV immediately.

But halfway through the bag, Mia’s world went dark. She passed out cold.

When she finally came to, she was lying in a narrow bed in a private ward.

A young nurse was busy swapping out her IV bag.

‘Ms. Carter, you’re finally awake.,” the nurse said, checking her monitor. “How are you feeling? Anything hurt?”

Mia shook her head, but a sharp pain shot through her skull like it was being split open. She opened her mouth, but her throat was too raw to make a sound.

She hadn’t expected the sickness to hit this hard. It felt like her body had just given up on her all at once.

The nurse finished swapping the IV bag and brought over a cup of warm water. “Here, drink some. Let me help

Mia braced herself and pushed her body up. After a few sips of water, she cleared her throat and finally found her

voice.

“I’m sorry. Thank you for taking care of me.”

The nurse smiled and shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. Your family called while you were out. He’s already here and he’s arranged a full workup for you. We’ve already finished the blood draw. Once these tests are done, we’ll get you down for an ultrasound. It’s about time for your prenatal checkup anyway, right?”

“Family?” Mia blanked. Since when did she have any family?

Ethan’s face flashed in her mind, but she shook the thought away instantly. He was the last person who belonged

on that list.

In the two years they were married, he had never once officially acted as her “family.

Wait, who is

Nurse Mo! Get to Bed 36, now! The patient’s crashing!”

A voice from the hallway cut Mia off before she could finish her question.

The nurse let go of her and set the water cup down, already moving toward the door. “Your family member is at he billing desk. He’ll be back any second. Hit the call button if you need anything.”

Mia sat there for a few seconds, trying to clear her head. She scanned the room for her phone, but it was nowhere o be found.

She immediately slammed the call button,

Hi, sorry. I passed out in the IV lounge, and now that I’m in this room, I can’t find my phone. Do you know where

it is?”

Your family member has it,” the nurse replied over the intercom. “He’ll be back in a bit. Just hang tight.”

Click. The line went dead,

A million questions surged up in Mia’s throat, but she didn’t get the chance to ask a single one.

The list of people who would drop everything to rush to the hospital and handle her bills was short. Pathetically

short.

Nina was one of them.

But Nina was a total night owl. She usually didn’t even crawl out of bed until the afternoon, right around the time Mia would be finishing work.
