His Secret Baby: Six Months After Divorce (Mia and Ethan) novel Chapter 28

Chapter 28

Even though she had called out today, if something went sideways at the office, Ethan wouldn’t hesitate to hunt her down.

Her phone had been on silent, but Ethan and Nina were the only two on her VIP list. Their calls were the only ones that would actually ring

Mia’s heart skipped a beat as a cold realization washed over her. Was it really Ethan? Was he actually here?

Mia bit her lip, her heart hammering against her ribs. All the color drained from her face.

The murse wouldn’t mention the pregnancy to Ethan, would she?

But the nurse thought he was her family. She’d ordered a full checkup. There was no way she wouldn’t talk about Mia’s condition.

Mia’s mind was a war zone. One part of her clung to a tiny shred of hope, while the other prepared for the

absolute worst.

Maybe it was Nina. Maybe Nina had just happened to have something to tell her.

She pressed the call button again, her fingers trembling.

Was the person who paid for me a Ms. Torres?”

Don’t you know your own family’s name?” The nurse sounded busy and annoyed. “It’s Mr. Hale.”

Click. The line went dead.

A chill swept over Mia. Her blood ran cold. She reached down and yanked the IV out of her hand. Bright red blood

eaked onto her skin.

A sharp sting flared through her arm, but she ignored it. She snatched a tissue, pressed it against the wound, grabbed her coat, and bolted for the door.

She had just stepped out of the ward when the nurse let out a gasp.

Miss Carter! Your IV isn’t finished!”

I have something to do; I’m stopping the drip,” Mia said, her voice frantic as she kept moving.

Her fever hadn’t broken yet. Her head throbbed, and her vision swam. She stumbled down the hall, her legs feeling ike lead.

The nurse rushed after her. “You can’t just leave! What if you collapse?”

‘I’ll take the risk,” Mia said, hitting the elevator button. The gauze on the back of her hand was already soaked through with blood.

“Nothing is more important than your health,” the nurse insisted, trying to stop her. “If you have things to take care of, let your family handle it.”

The nurse looked at her pointedly. “Don’t gamble with your life or the baby’s.”

Mia’s hand went to her stomach. Hang in there, she whispered to the baby in her heart. Please, just hang in there.

Mia didn’t know what to say. She just shook her head, her eyes filled with apology. “I appreciate the concern, really. But I have to leave. Now.”

The nurse realized she couldn’t stop her. She sighed. “Fine. But you have to sign a waiver first. We can’t be held liable if something goes wrong.”

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open.

Ethan stepped out. His eyes locked onto Mia instantly. She looked like a ghost deathly pale and so thin she looked like she’d snap in half.

When his gaze dropped to the blood on the back of her hand, his eyes went dark.

‘Ms. Carter! You’re bleeding!”

Leo followed right behind Ethan, his voice jumping an octave as he took in the sight.

Mia’s wide eyes crashed into Ethan’s sharp, predatory stare.

Mia’s heart leaped into her throat. It hammered against her ribs like a drum loud, fast, and frantic.

Are you two her family?” the nurse asked, sounding like she’d just found her lifelines. “She just woke up and is already putting up a fight. She’s trying to walk out before her IV is even finished.”

The nurse looked at Ethan like he was her personal savior.

Mia tried to keep her cool. “Mr. Hale, I ah!”

Ethan took two long strides toward her and swept her up into his arms. “Which room is hers?” he barked.

‘Room 108!” the nurse stammered, pointing down the hall.

Ethan didn’t say another word, carrying her straight toward the room.

‘Mr. Hale, you didn’t need to come all this way for me,” Mia said, her voice trembling as she tried to push against his chest. “I know my own body. Whatever is going on with me… it has nothing to do with you.”

Her fingers instinctively grabbed the lapel of his suit, even as she tried to push him away.

Ethan let out a harsh, cold laugh. “Is that so? Because I think this trip was damn well necessary. You and I? We need to have a long talk.”
