Chapter 36
The Bennett family’s net worth had been skyrocketing over the past six months, but this news pushed them to an all-time high.
Meanwhile, Mia drove home and packed a few essentials. Without a second thought, she headed straight for the
orphanage.
Mia was planning to stay at the orphanage for the next few days. It was the only way she could really look after the
kids.
The place wasn’t big just five or six rooms for about a dozen children.
Almost every kid there struggled with some kind of health issue. Between the treatments and the meds, the medical bills were a constant, crushing burden.
Donations barely covered the kids’ daily needs. Mia and Nina footed the bill for most of the medical expenses.
Aunt May tried to supplement the costs with her handmade crafts, but the income was next to nothing.
Mia handed out snacks to the kids and then helped May with whatever chores she could handle.
‘Mia, Nina told me you’re planning to move away after New Year’s?”
Aunt May asked, her voice cautious.
Since leaving the orphanage, Mia had been a closed book. She came back to help and send money regularly, but she never shared anything about her personal life.
May had no idea Mia had married Ethan Hale. She didn’t even know Mia was pregnant.
‘Yeah, there are better opportunities out there. Nina and I are planning to leave Northbrook. But don’t worry, the monthly transfers won’t stop. We’ll be back to visit for the holidays, too.”
Aunt May let out a long breath. “That’s good…”.
She followed it with a sheepish, awkward smile. “I’m not just worried about the money. I just don’t want you guys taking unnecessary risks. If you can’t make a living out there, what’s going to happen to all these kids?”
“Don’t worry, Nina and I have it all planned out. We’d never turn our backs on the kids.”
Mia had saved up a nice nest egg over the years. Without that safety net, she never would’ve had the her job, let alone keep the baby.
“Do you really have to leave?” May pressed, not willing to drop it. “Where are you even going?”
“We haven’t picked a spot yet. I’ll let you know as soon as we’re settled.”
Mia gave her a small, tight smile.
May stopped asking, but her face soured. She clearly wasn’t happy.
A moment later, May dumped a pile of dirty clothes into Mia’s arms.

“I’ll take care of things in here. You go get the laundry done. Oh, and the kids are all dying for seafood. Go buy some it’s the New Year, after all…”

Mia’s phone started buzzing, cutting May off.
Mia turned away to take the call.
“Ms. Carter. Eight tonight. See you at Eastport Club.”
It was Jaxon Rivers.

He sounded like his usual arrogant, playboy self, but there was a faint trace of excitement in his voice.
It hit her then. She’d promised to be Jaxon’s assistant for two days.
