His Secret Baby: Six Months After Divorce (Mia and Ethan) novel Chapter 399

Chapter 399

What exactly had Cole Preston messaged Ethan Hale?

In just a few seconds, a dozen possibilities flashed through Mia Carter’s mind.

She didn’t have time to worry about being a laughingstock; she answered the phone.

‘Mr. Hale.”

‘Come downstairs.”

Ethan’s voice was dark and heavy.

Mia didn’t need to see him to know how terrible his expression must be. Her heart skipped two beats.

If Nina Torres had told him those things, she was going to be completely humiliated in front of him. But based on Ethan’s tone, he wasn’t amused-he was furious.

The line went dead. Mia’s hand dropped as she stared at the darkening screen, her brow furrowing.

What’s wrong?”

Vina quickly swallowed her food and cleared her throat. “Why the face? He can’t possibly scold you just because you cried on your divorce night, right?”

Mia began packing her things to leave. “Something feels off. Do me a favor and find out exactly what Cole said to

Ethan.”

Nina stood up to see her to the door. “Did Cole not say anything good?”

Either way, Ethan is here to see me, and he sounds like he’s in a foul mood.”

Mia hadn’t provoked him at all lately. Aside from that conversation, what else could it be?

She walked out of the hospital entrance and immediately spotted a Cullinan parked at the curb.

Ethan was leaning against the car, the neon lights outlining his tall, imposing silhouette. His eyes were deep and omber, filled with an unreadable, brooding intensity.

The moment Mia appeared, his gaze locked onto her with unerring precision.

The hospital grounds were sparse at this hour. Mia was wearing a cream-colored long dress that made her stand >ut in the night. She lifted her hem as she hurried down the steps, her pace quick and light as she approached him.

Mr. Hale, it’s late. Is something the matter?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened, the lines of his face sharp and rigid.

‘Mia, if you’re going to hide things, make sure you hide them well. Because if I find the evidence…”

‘You’re going to regret it.”

Mia filled in the rest of the sentence in her head, her heart hammering against her ribs. Aside from the baby, she hadn’t hidden anything from him. Ethan’s sudden outburst had to be related to whatever Cole had leaked.

‘Get in the car. I’m taking you back.”

Throwing out those few words laced with irritation, Ethan pulled open the car door and got in first.

Mia took two steps forward and tapped on the window. “I can get back on my own.”

Ethan shot her a sharp, piercing glare. “What? Do you need me to hire a carriage and a parade to get you in here?”

Mia’s reluctance was written all over her face. She pulled the door open and climbed in, her expression one of forced compliance.

“If you weren’t pregnant, I wouldn’t even bother driving you home,” Ethan growled, stepping on the gas.

The veins on his forehead were bulging; he was clearly at his breaking point. Mia didn’t know what he was so angry about, and fearing that saying more would only make things worse, she didn’t probe further.

“Then I truly must thank you, Mr. Hale.”

She turned her head away, staring out the window. The clusters of neon lights reflecting on her face highlighted the awkward, strained atmosphere inside the car.

Half an hour later, the Cullinan turned at an intersection.

Mia pointed toward the roadside. “You can just drop me at the entrance. I’ll walk the rest of the way.”

A minor fender bender had occurred at the apartment complex gates, and the road was completely blocked. The sounds of a heated argument could be heard even through the closed windows.

As soon as Ethan pulled over, Mia opened the door and stepped out.

Ethan paused as he unbuckled his seatbelt, watching her walk briskly toward the apartment buildings. Mia didn’t ook back, but she could feel his gaze burning into her back until she passed the accident scene and turned a

corner.

Only then did she stop and glance back.

“Good girl, press yourself against the horse’s back. I will teach you how to ride…” Mom’s boyfriend, Zale, said he’d teach me to ride….
