Chapter 4
Chloe burst back into the office, her eyes frantically darting toward the massive oak desk.
The white envelope was gone. Ethan had already taken it.

She gritted her teeth, her manicured nails digging into her palms. Damn it.
“Where’s Ethan?” she snapped at Leo, who was hunched over his laptop, furiously typing. “And why are you booking plane tickets?”
“An emergency popped up at the overseas regional office. Mr. Hale needs to fly out ASAP,” Leo replied without looking up.
Before he could finish, Chloe yanked her passport out of her designer purse and slammed it onto his keyboard.
“Book one for me, too. I’m going with him.”
Leo blinked, caught off guard. “Ms. Bennett, this is a strictly business-”
“I don’t care,” Chloe interrupted, rolling her eyes. For the past six months, she had been his shadow. She wasn’t about to let him leave the country alone, especially not after Mia Carter had just crawled out of the woodwork. “Just do your job.”
A few minutes later, Ethan emerged from the private lounge in a fresh, tailored suit. He grabbed his briefcase and strode toward the elevator without missing a beat.
He hadn’t even opened Mia’s resignation letter. In the rush, it had been tossed blindly into his bag, completely forgotten.
Three days later.
Mia was sitting in her dim living room, scrolling through pregnancy forums, when a breaking news alert flashed across her phone screen.
Headline: WEDDING BELLS? Billionaire Ethan Hale Escorts Childhood Sweetheart Abroad!
Mia’s thumb hovered over the screen. She had been hiding from the news for six months, but like a masochist, she tapped the article.
A high–definition paparazzi shot filled her screen.
There was Ethan, looking sharp and devastatingly handsome in his black suit. But instead of dominating a boardroom, he was standing patiently outside an airport ladies‘ room, holding a bright pink designer handbag.
He was waiting for Chloe.
The head of Bayview Holdings. The ruthless, untouchable king of Northbrook’s business empire.
This was the man who had never truly looked at Mia during their two–year marriage. Yet here he was, doing something so mundane, so undeniably sweet, for another woman.
The photos radiated a sense of elite sophistication and perfect romance.
A suffocating lump formed in Mia’s throat. She clicked the screen off, plunging the room back into darkness.
She placed a trembling hand over her still–flat belly.
Her salary over the past years had been generous. She had saved enough to disappear and give her child a comfortable life. She didn’t need him
She wouldn’t need him.
“It’s just you and me now, little one,” she whispered into the empty room.
She was done hiding. She was done hoping. As soon as Ethan returned, she would force him to sign that resignation, and she would vanish from his world forever.
