Mia couldn’t afford to wait. Her pregnancy would start showing soon, and morning sickness was already threatening to expose her secret. Using a work errand as a cover, she drove to the headquarters to bypass Ethan and check the status of her resignation directly with Human

Resources.

But her timing was terrible. HR was locked in a year–end review meeting that wouldn’t end for hours.

Frustrated, Mia turned on her heel to leave.

Just as she reached the stairwell, a hand suddenly clamped down on her wrist.

“Mia! I finally caught you!”

Mia jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She spun around to see Lila Hale, Ethan’s younger sister, pouting like a spoiled child.

“Lila, keep your voice down,” Mia hissed, pulling the girl into the motion–sensor–lit stairwell. “And stop calling me your sister–in–law. Ethan and I are divorced.”

Lila was three years younger than Ethan. During Mia’s time as secretary and secret wife, she had protected the naive girl from the corporate shark tank more times than she could count. As a result, Lila absolutely adored her.

“Divorced or not, you’re still family to me!” Lila whined, clinging to Mia’s arm. “Grandma and Grandpa have been missing you so much. I’m calling out of work right now. You are coming home with me!”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Mia said, prying Lila’s fingers off. “It’s the end of the year. If you ditch work, your probationary review will tank.”

“Please, Mia? Just a quick visit? I’m begging you!” Lila’s eyes welled with dramatic, genuine tears.

Mia’s resolve cracked. She let out a heavy, defeated sigh.

To be honest, her secret marriage to Ethan had been flawless–except for the tiny detail that he didn’t love her.

When they married, Ethan’s mother, Miranda, had treated Mia like trash. But Ethan’s grandparents? They had showered Mia with the kind of unconditional warmth and affection the former orphan had always craved.

Now that Mia was planning to flee the city forever, she realized she would probably never see the elderly couple again.
