His Secret Baby: Six Months After Divorce (Mia and Ethan) novel Chapter 40

Chapter 40

But Mia’s room was dark. The curtains were drawn tight, leaving her in a silence that felt hollow and desolate.

That phone call had killed any hope of sleep. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed, sharp stabs of pain hitting her every few seconds.

She curled into a ball, burying herself deep under the covers.

She drifted back into a daze, lying there half-awake for most of the day.

Finally, her hunger became too much to ignore, forcing her to fully wake up.

Mia had just climbed out of bed when Nina FaceTimed her.

Wait, you’re not at the orphanage?” Nina asked, surprised to see her at home. “Did Aunt May start her shit again?”

No. Something came up, so I came back yesterday.”

Even as she said it, Mia knew she wouldn’t be going back to the orphanage anytime soon.

Don’t go back there by yourself next time. Don’t let them bully you.” Nina snapped.

She had a short fuse, and Aunt May never had a cross word for her.

Aunt May worked her to the bone every time she catches her.

Mia chuckled. “I won’t have to go back alone anymore. Once I quit this job, we’re sticking together.”

I found another great spot,” Nina said, changing the subject. “Get dressed and get over here. The doula’s gone, so t’s just us and the baby for the New Year.”

Nina had been planning to have Mia over for the holidays anyway.

Mia had originally intended to go back and help Aunt May at the orphanage.

t wasn’t really for Aunt May, though it was for the kids. She wanted to do her part for them.

But things didn’t go as planned.

Her fridge was completely empty, and with all the stores closed for the holiday, she had no choice but to head to

Nina’s.

Mia grabbed a quick slice of bread to settle her stomach and headed over.

They spent their first New Year together, making dumplings from scratch and staying up late to watch the countdown with her son, Toby Torres.

While everyone else was busy visiting relatives, the two of them didn’t leave the house for days.

At night, they watched the fireworks through the window. During the day, they cooked, binged TV shows, and talked endlessly about where they should move once they finally left Northbrook.

In the blink of an eye, the holiday was over.

It was the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, and Bayview was back in business. At 9:00 AM sharp, Mia arrived at her desk, carrying a resignation letter.

There was a welcome-back reception that morning. As soon as Ethan Hale arrived at the building, he went straight to the eighth floor to make an appearance.

It took him half an hour to slip away from the party and head up to his office.

The entire top floor was dead silent. The only sound was the faint thud of leather shoes hitting the

carpet.

As he rounded the long corridor, Ethan Hale’s tall, powerful frame came into Mia’s view.

Mia stood up immediately. “Mr. Hale.”

Ethan had one hand shoved in his pocket, his tailored slacks perfectly hugging his long, lean legs.

He stopped at her desk and pulled a gift envelope from his pocket.

“Thank you,” she said.

Ethan gave out New Year bonus envelopes to the staff every year on the first day back

Mia took it and set it aside. Then, she held out her resignation letter.

There was no envelope for this one. Just in black and white. The words Resignation Letter looked sharp and jarring.

Ethan’s gaze dropped to the paper, but he didn’t reach for it.

“Thank you for the opportunities and for looking out for me all these years, Mr. Hale. I hope our paths cross again in the future.”

Mia pushed the letter a little closer to him.
