Chapter 41
Mia was stuck. She didn’t know how to answer that.
If she insisted on leaving now, it would look like she’d already lined up a new gig and was planning to betray the
company.
But staying… staying wasn’t an option.
Ethan stood there, his dark eyes locked on her, waiting for a response.
Mr. Hale, you’re overthinking this. I’m resigning for strictly personal reasons.”
Mia used the “personal business” card, hoping he’d respect her privacy and back off.
Ethan arched an eyebrow. He paused for a beat, his gaze heavy. “Then for personal reasons, I’m rejecting your esignation.”
With that, he turned and walked into his office.
Mia stared at his back, her forehead knotting up in frustration.
This wasn’t like last time when things were vague. This time, Ethan had given her a flat-out “no.
But his reason for denying her? It was total bullshit, just a way to shut her down.
She hadn’t expected him to block her.
Like he said, Bayview didn’t revolve around her. It would keep spinning whether she was there or not.
She wasn’t ready to give up yet. She followed him right into the office.
Mr. Hale, the company contract clearly states that you cannot reject a termination request without a legitimate
eason.”
Ethan tossed his jacket aside and sat behind his desk. He reached up, his long, well-defined fingers tugging at his
ie to loosen it.
He narrowed his eyes, his voice dropping to a cold, hard tone. “In the history of this company, no one has ever walked away before their contract was up.”,
His stance was clear. If Mia wanted out, she would have to wait until the clock ran out on her deal.
Mia bit her lip. Her hand gripped the hem of her shirt so tightly that the faint blue veins on the back of her hand were clearly visible.
Ethan watched her, his dark, bottomless eyes tracking the stubborn set of her jaw.
After a long, tense silence, Mia finally gave in.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the office. Back at her desk, she immediately started digging through her files to find her digital contract with Bayview.
Five months. That was all the time she had left on her contract.
But her belly was a ticking clock. In two more months, there would be no hiding the bump.

Chloe Bennett stepped out of the elevator and tossed her bag to Zoe. She shot a quick, cold glance in Mia’s direction.
“Coffee’s on me today,” Chloe said. “Go around and see what everyone wants.”
Zoe’s eyes lit up, and she immediately piped up, “Ms. Bennett, you’re so generous! What’s the occasion? You look like you’ve got some great news.”
Chloe couldn’t stop grinning, her face glowing with excitement. “Don’t you guys ever check the news?”
“Wait, what?” Zoe froze for a second, then slapped her forehead. “Oh my god! Congratulations, Chloe! You and Mr. Hale are finally getting engaged!”
“Go on,” Chloe said, swaying her hips as she walked toward the office. “Tell everyone not to be shy. It’s on me.
Zoe spun around and barked into the office, “Chloe I mean, our future boss’s wife is buying coffee for everyone!”
The office turned into a madhouse. Everyone scrambled to give Zoe their orders.
Stella darted out of the secretarial pool and rushed straight to Mia’s desk.
“Mia! Chloe’s treating the whole office. What do you want?”
Before Mia could even open her mouth, Zoe’s voice cut through the room. “Stella! Who told you to ask her? Ms. Carter is so busy. She doesn’t have time for a coffee break.”
Stella’s eyes widened. “What is that supposed to mean? Why wouldn’t she
“Stella,” Mia cut her off. “It’s fine. I don’t want anything. Just go.”
