“If he wants the baby, are you going to take responsibility?” Nina Torres retorted, looking at him like he was talking out of his ass.

Cole Preston flinched. He instinctively reached for his phone, wanting to hit the record button.

But Nina had already changed the subject. “I’m not talking about that with you. Just tell me what Mia is having. Please?”

Cole paused, glanced at her, and then looked away. “No comment.”

“Jerk,” Nina muttered under her breath. She grabbed the ultrasound report and walked out.

Meanwhile, Mia Carter finished her blood draw and got ready to head to the office. She called Nina and told her she could go home first.

Nina drove to the office entrance to wait for her, insisting on giving her a ride.

“Ethan rejected my resignation. I need to go see what’s going on.”

Mia leaned down toward the car window, reluctant to get in. She was afraid she’d be there for a long time.

“Get in. I have something to tell you.” Nina gave her a meaningful look, gesturing for her to hop in.

Yielding to her persistence, Mia climbed into the car. “What? Did you manage to squeeze the gender out of Cole?”

Nina floored it, merging into the flow of traffic. “You want to know?”

When Nina had been pregnant, she had tried every trick in the book to find out. But after all this time, Mia hadn’t shown an ounce of curiosity about the baby’s gender. Nina had assumed she didn’t care much.

“If I’d known you cared, I would’ve knelt and begged Cole for the answer.”

Mia shook her head. “Don’t bother. I’m not that desperate to know. I’m just curious about what you wanted to tell

me.”

Nina arched an eyebrow and shot her an excited look. “Cole just told me he knows the baby is Ethan’s. He thinks Ethan might not even want the kid if you come clean. Is it possible that after you admit it, he’ll just marry Chloe Bennett anyway and give you a massive child support settlement?”

A leak from Ethan’s deep pockets would be more than enough for Mia and the baby to live comfortably for life. To them, it was a staggering amount of money.

Mia’s breathing hitched. After a long silence, she asked, “So…. how exactly does Cole know if the baby is Ethan’s or

not?”

“I…” Nina choked, her hands fumbling on the steering wheel. “It wasn’t me! I didn’t say anything!”

She hadn’t said it. But she had just been tricked by Cole into confirming it.

“Dammit!” Nina smacked her forehead hard. “Mia, I’m so sorry. Cole is such a sneaky bastard. He played me!”
