Chapter 424
Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose with his long fingers, his face taut. Was this really the person Mia had chosen as an assistant?
The call ended. Mia put her phone away just as Nina arrived, and the two of them went inside together.
Cole had already arranged everything. As soon as she arrived, she was taken directly to the ultrasound room. Nina went in with her.
Mia lay on the bed and lifted her top, revealing her slightly protruding belly.
“You still need to improve your nutrition, Mia. While the baby isn’t exactly malnourished, it’s overall on the small side,” Cole said as he performed the scan.
Nina stood next to Cole, staring at the blurry images on the monitor. “Dr. Preston, what are we looking at?”
She couldn’t make heads or tails of the screen.
Cole pointed at the monitor to explain. “This is the baby’s hand. This is a leg. And this is the head.”
“That’s amazing. You can actually see all that?” Nina laughed awkwardly. “Then can you tell if it’s a boy or a girl?”
“Nina, identifying the gender of a fetus is against the law,” Cole replied with a deadpan expression.
“But we’re friends, aren’t we?” Nina grinned. “I won’t report you.”
“Are you planning on a natural birth or a C-section?” Cole asked, shifting back to Mia.
Mia thought about it. “Which is better for the baby?”
Cole set down the wand and handed her a tissue. “Scientifically speaking, there’s no difference. The old saying that babies who aren’t ‘squeezed’ during birth aren’t as smart is just superstition.”
“I haven’t decided yet. If conditions allow, I’ll try for a natural birth.” Mia had heard that C-sections could have long-term side effects. Even now, the scar on Nina’s belly felt uncomfortable sometimes.
“I should remind you of one thing.” Cole printed out the ultrasound report. “Whether it’s a natural birth or a C-section, there are risks involved. A family member will need to sign the consent forms.”
“I’ll sign for her,” Nina said.
“It’s best if a direct relative or someone with a special relationship signs,” Cole reminded them. “Your situation is unique, Mia. You don’t have direct relatives here. You should let the father come. Regardless of the situation between you two now, he is the primary choice for an authorized signer.”
Mia stood up and adjusted her clothes. “I’ll just have Nina sign.”
“She signed for me when I gave birth,” Nina added, leaning against the wall and pointing at Mia. “We’re each other’s family. The law might not state it, but best friends are direct relatives in spirit.”
Cole looked like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
“Mia, go get your blood drawn first.” Nina took Mia’s bag and signaled for her to go out. Mia nodded to Cole and turned to leave.
