“You’re mistaken. The baby isn’t Ethan’s.”
Mia Carter denied it firmly. “I didn’t even conceive this child until six months after the divorce.”
Miranda Hale let out a cold, angry laugh. “When it comes to being calculating, you really are number one. You knew I never approved of you, and you knew I’d never let you have a child while you were married to my son. So, you intentionally divorced him just to make me lower my guard…”
Mia didn’t know where Miranda was getting this internal drama from. It was so ridiculous it was almost funny.
But she knew that if this story got out, everyone in high society would believe it. After all, the wealthy were so full of themselves they assumed everyone around them acted with a hidden agenda.
“I’m not as greedy or status-obsessed as you think, and I certainly don’t love Ethan that much. I wouldn’t waste this much energy just to stay by his side. This child has nothing to do with Ethan, and even less to do with the Hale family.”
After giving her brief, blunt explanation, Mia hung up.
Miranda dialed back immediately. The phone rang a few times before being cut off. When she tried again, she couldn’t get through at all.
Mia actually dared to block her?
Miranda’s vision went dark for a second. She sat on the sofa to calm down, then grabbed her phone to call Chloe
Bennett.
“Auntie… “sob, sob…” Chloe’s crying came through the speaker. “Mia is so cruel. Ethan must be so afraid of the scandal getting out that he’s letting her lead him by the nose! But what are we supposed to do? How can the wedding even happen now?”
“Stop crying, Chloe. You’re a good girl,” Miranda consoled her. “I’m going to Everett right now to handle this for you! Don’t pick a fight with Ethan over this. Like you said, he has to worry about the family and the company. Try to understand him.”
Chloe sniffled. “I… I know. Don’t worry, Auntie. I won’t cause trouble for Ethan, and I won’t put the Hale family in an embarrassing position!”
Miranda breathed a sigh of relief. “Good girl. I knew I was right about you. For now… don’t tell your parents. I don’t want them worrying back in Northbrook. I’ll settle everything for you, understand?”
“I know. I’ll do whatever you say, Auntie,” Chloe whispered.
“Alright, stop crying. I’m booking a ticket to Everett right now. Leave everything to me.”
Miranda hung up and booked the next flight.
Back in Everett, Mia stared at her phone. When Miranda had tried to call a second time, a bad feeling had already begun to settle in her gut.

Miranda wasn’t the type to let things go.
However, Mia figured Ethan would be able to handle his own mother.

Merha
‘What’s up?” Nina Torres asked, peeking through the door of the nursery. “What did your former mother-in-law
want?”
‘She thinks I’m carrying Ethan’s baby,” Mia replied.
Nina froze. “Wait. The news about you being pregnant has been out for days. She’s only reaching out now?”
It was suspicious.
