“Auntie!” Chloe pouted, clinging to her arm and acting cute. “I have my own strengths. I’m way more sweet and thoughtful than Lils could ever be!”

Lila was a total tomboy blunt, straightforward, and not the type to play the “sweet daughter” role.

That was exactly why Miranda kept Chloe so close, bringing her over to the Hale estate every chance she got.

‘You’re Ethan’s fiance and the future Mrs. Hale. What is there to be afraid of?”

Miranda patted the back of Chloe’s hand. “From now on, do whatever you want. If anything goes wrong, I’ve got

your back.”

With those words, Chloe was practically walking on air. She felt untouchable.

‘Alright, get those papers handled. I’m heading out to deal with your engagement party. I’m meeting your parents onight to lock in a date don’t be late, and make sure Ethan shows up on time.”

Aftet a final round of orders, Miranda hurried off.

Chloe didn’t know the first thing about corporate business. Tricking Ethan into signing a legal document without

im noticing? That was going to be a real challenge.

Half the day flew by in a blur. Ethan and Mia were in and out of the office, running around and staying buried in

work.

Chloe tried to jump into the conversation several times, but she couldn’t find an opening.

It was almost time to clock out when a project hit a snag. Ethan buried himself in the conference room to deal

with it.

Mia could see how restless Chloe was getting.

She tried to toss Chloe a lifeline a few times, but the girl didn’t know the first thing about the company’s business. Mia eventually gave up.

7:00 PM. The meeting finally wrapped up.

Mia stood up, packed her things, and followed Ethan out.

The second they stepped out, Chloe rushed over and shoved Mia aside to get to Ethan.

“Ethan, my parents are already at the restaurant. Let’s go, we shouldn’t keep them waiting.”

Ethan checked his watch and handed a stack of files to Mia. “Put these in my office.”

Mia nodded and took the documents. She watched as Chloe pulled Ethan toward the exit.

She could hear Chloe’s voice trailing off. “Your mom said we’re picking the engagement date tonight. Ethan, do you have any ideas?”

“So, Mr. Hale and Ms. Bennett are really getting engaged!”

“I heard the secretarial pool gossiping about it a few days ago. They’ve been planning this for a while.”

Mia froze in her tracks. A stream of executives filed past her, their chatter fading into the distance as she stood

there alone.

The mindless chatter swirled around her. Suddenly, Mia couldn’t breathe.

Ethan disappeared around the corner. His deep, low voice drifted back to her, faint and distant.

She couldn’t make out what he was saying.

Near the elevators, Zoe caught up to Ethan and Chloe, waving a folder in the air.

The head secretary is out. Could you sign my time-off request?”

Ethan glanced at her. “Take it to Leo.”

Zoe shot a look at Chloe.

Leo’s probably gone for the day,” Chloe cut in. “It’s just a quick signature. No big deal.”

Chloe grabbed the form, glanced at it, and shoved it toward Ethan.
