Chapter 445
Ethan’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he uttered two words. “I don’t.”
“Oh,” Cole Preston said flatly. “Then never mind. I’ve had a lot to drink. I’m going to bed.”
“You sound like you can still go,” Ethan replied. “Keep drinking. I’m coming over.”
Cole: “…”
‘If
you want to know, I can just tell you over the phone.”
‘I don’t want to know,” Ethan insisted.
His tone was so righteous it sounded as if he simply wanted a drink to soothe the summer heat of an Everett night.
The hospital had arranged a luxury penthouse in the city center for Cole. When Ethan arrived, the door was open, clearly waiting for him.
He walked in carrying two bottles of high-proof vodka and a bottle of red wine.
You’re trying to kill me tonight,” Cole said, taking the alcohol and opening a bottle. “I have work tomorrow. I’m only having one glass.”
Ethan let out a low grunt, sat on the sofa, and took the glass Cole handed him.
They had shared countless silent drinking sessions like this. But this time, Cole could tell at a glance that Ethan was holding something back.
Cole pretended not to notice. He took small sips, chatting about work and old memories.
At one in the morning, Cole set down his empty glass and stood up. “We’ve had plenty. Don’t leave tonight; just get come sleep.”
He started walking toward the bedroom.
Weren’t you going to tell me about Jaxon Rivers?” Ethan leaned back on the sofa, his long legs bent at the knees.
Despite his natural, lazy posture, there was a hint of unease in his voice.
Cole let out a light chuckle and sat back down. “Jaxon asked me about the exact timing of Mia’s pregnancy. He wanted to know the approximate date of conception.”
Ethan’s brow furrowed. “What does that mean?”
You’re asking me? Who am I supposed to ask?” Cole shrugged. “Mia really is a mystery. So many people are nterested in the child in her belly. Do you really not want to know the truth?”
The living room fell into a dead silence.
Tiny bubbles popped in the reddish-brown liquid in the glass, reflecting Ethan’s deep, inscrutable expression.
After a long silence, Ethan drained his glass in one gulp, set it down, and stood to leave. “Going to sleep.”
‘Ethan, since when did you become a coward?”
Cole watched Ethan walk toward the guest room, feeling half-anxious and half-helpless.

At the restaurant.
Ethan’s departure caused Miranda Hale’s face to darken completely.
“Auntie, I think I just saw Mia.”
Chloe Bennett glanced out the window, her expression full of grievance. “I’m afraid she knew he was coming to dinner with me tonight and came here specifically to cause trouble.”
Miranda’s eyes shook. The rage on her refined face intensified.
“Unacceptable! How dare she!”
“Auntie, I can accept breaking up with Ethan because we don’t get along, or even him telling me he doesn’t love me anymore. But if Mia is the one who destroyed us, I really can’t let it go.”
Chloe stood up and sat down next to Miranda, grabbing her arm. “If word of this gets out, Ethan’s reputation will
suffer too.”
What Miranda cared about most was Ethan’s reputation.
“You’ve been wronged. This is all Mia’s fault. Ethan is under her spell. She’s been calculating from the very beginning. I bet Ethan was even blackmailed into marrying her back then. I underestimated her!”
The moment Chloe nodded, tears began to fall. “What are we going to do?”
Miranda was about to say something, but seeing the look in Chloe’s eyes, she changed her tune. “I’ll handle this. You can’t be involved, otherwise it’ll affect your relationship with Ethan. Be a good girl and go back to
Northbrook first.”
“Go… go back to Northbrook?” Chloe hesitated. “Auntie, you won’t be bewitched by Mia too, will you?”
“How could that be!” Miranda snapped. “Do you think I’d let a woman like her manipulate me? Don’t worry. I’ll cut off all her hopes so she has no leverage left to blackmail Ethan!”
“Zoe, I’ve placed your Beta necklace on Alpha Ethan’s desk. He has approved your resignation, but he didn’t realize it was you leaving. Should I remind him?”…
