Chapter 444
‘I’ll look into it for you.” Jaxon gave her a wink, pulled out his phone, and stepped away to make a call.
While he was on the phone, Mia went back into the kitchen to reheat the hangover soup, letting it simmer for a bit longer.
A moment later, Jaxon returned with a broad grin, looking quite pleased. “Mia, I never thought I’d one day make a friend like you.”
A woman, and the assistant of his arch-rival at that.
Mia handed him the hot hangover soup. “Even as friends, we need to maintain boundaries. Drink up and get going. It’s not appropriate for you to be at my place in the middle of the night.”
‘You’re a pregnant woman, what could I even do to you?”
Faced with the eviction notice, Jaxon looked unhappy.
‘I’m afraid of bringing you trouble.”
News of Mia’s unwed pregnancy had just broken recently. Although the Gallaghers had suppressed it, there was no guarantee reporters wouldn’t dig deeper for a scoop.
Do you think I’m afraid of them?” Jaxon scoffed. “And if they misunderstand, I’ll just claim the child. A godfather
s still a father.”
Mia froze. “Godfather?”
axon’s eyes widened. “We’re such good friends now. I can’t even be the godfather to the child in your belly?”
Since when were we that close? We just established the friendship a second ago.*
If you want, I can even be the ‘God-grandpa,” Jaxon grinned. “That way, I’ll be a generation higher than Ethan.”
A line of black appeared on Mia’s forehead. “How about you consider being a ‘God-brother’ instead?”
axon smacked his lips. “Let’s meet in the middle. Let’s stick with Godfather.”
He took the hangover soup and sipped it slowly, bantering with Mia.
As they interacted, she realized Jaxon wasn’t actually unpleasant. He was quite respectful, and talking with him
was comfortable.
One cup of hangover soup wasn’t enough, so Mia stood up to brew him some ginger tea.
As she busied herself in the kitchen, Jaxon’s voice drifted in from the living room as he chatted away.
Mia’s gaze drifted out the window.
Under the shade of the trees, a tall figure stood still. The flickering light of a cigarette illuminated the man’s sharp, well-defined features.
Ethan?
Mia’s heart skipped a beat. She rubbed her eyes and looked again.

The space under the trees was empty. No one was there.
‘Did I see wrong?”

She took a breath and closed the kitchen window. The tension that had inexplicably tightened in her body finally
relaxed.
Not far away, Ethan stepped out from behind a tree. He stubbed out his cigarette, the dying embers letting out a small puff of dark smoke.
He turned and walked away, his tall figure stretching out into a long, solitary shadow.
The Cullinan sped down the empty highway.
A sharp ringtone sounded again and again, forcing Ethan to pull his wandering attention back.
