Cole Preston told Mia Carter she had to stay put-no getting out of bed, no returning to the ward.

Her abdomen throbbed with a dull ache. Every slight movement caused more amniotic fluid to leak. Mia didn’t even dare to speak.

“Don’t be too nervous. Try to save your strength,” Cole said, checking on her. “A C-section takes a lot out of you. You’ll be weak afterward and need to look after the baby. Don’t waste your energy now.”

“I understand,” Mia whispered, her lips pale. “Isn’t the surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning? Go take care of your other patients. You don’t need to watch me.”

She was exhausted, barely having the strength to communicate with him.

But Cole wouldn’t leave.

“I’m staying here tonight.” He pulled over a chair and sat by her side. “Try to get some sleep.”

Mia wanted to tell him it wasn’t necessary, but Cole had already opened a medical journal. His stance was firm.
